Charlie Manuel’s mother passes away, plans to manage Game 2

Charlie Manuel plans to manage the Philadelphia Phillies against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 2 of the NLCS despite the death of his mother.

The Phillies said that June Manuel died Friday morning. No other information was immediately available.

Manuel watched batting practice from his customary spot behind the cage, but did not talk to the media and his usual pregame press conference was canceled.

My condolences to Manuel. Looks like the Phillies really want to win for him, putting up a 4-spot in the second inning.

I really respect his decision to manage the game. I know from personal experience how hard it is to do anything when a parent dies, especially the day of.

Did FOX mention it at all? They were just talking about Manuel for a couple minutes but I didn't hear them say anything.

Kind of a "My Mother the Car" scenario brought to life, as it were.

I know headline writers have to cut corners, but really, guys.

Bummer. But really, how old would she have been? Manuel is in his mid-sixties. That's a pretty impressive run for her nonetheless.

She was 87. Charlie is the oldest of ten children. Tough for her children and family, no doubt, but it seems as if she lived a long and healthy life. My condolences to big Charlie.

I feel for him. And I understand why he's managing, too. When my Dad died I would have loved to have something to do that night, rather than just sitting around with my grief.

Condolences to Manuel and his family.

I misread the blurb on Rotoworld about this. I thought it said that Charlie Manuel had passed away, but that he would still be in the dugout for Game 2. Which seemed like it would have been Weekend at Bernie's meets Pedro Cerrano, or something.

I give Manuel credit for staying. And I'll say an extra prayer for the repose of his Mom's soul.
