Chet Coppock: Most Home Runs are a Waste of Time

THE HOME RUN IS THE MOST OVERRATED STATE IN BASEBALL. Do you hear me? Dingers are overrated as are most alderman and the hot dogs at Cubs Park. Mark Eugene Grace, noted slugger? turned broadcaster, and I- chatted about this for roughly three hours on a dreary Tuesday about 15 years ago.

...Home runs should be listed in two separate categories. T.M.H.R’s. Totally meaningless home runs…

...M.H.R’s. Meaningful home runs…

His conclusion was him guessing that only 54% of Adam Dunn's HRs are meaningful. At worst, by his dumbass definition, it's 69%. ####, he's the worst.

So you are the Marquette fan who did this @ a DePaul game a few years ago.

Holy crap that was a worthless article. While he's correct, that many HR's are worthless, the same is true of every baseball stat. Rennie Stennet's 7-7 games? 6 of the hits were totally worthless, as his team had a 4 run lead before he got his 2nd hit, and won 22-0. Likewise, John Candlaria's 7 innings of 3 hit, no walk shutout pitching was totally worthless, as he had a 9 run lead before he took the mound.

Speaking of which...I see Baltimore's first three batters homered today. How often has that happened?

Babe Ruth had 520 in wins, not counting probably most of the 9 he had before 1918.

I remember listening to Chet Coppock before or after White Sox games in 1983. That may have been the last time I thought about him.
   28. Walt Davis Posted: May 10, 2012 at 09:09 PM (#4128803)
Oddly, I was thinking of Crenshaw just the other day -- granted in the "who was that guy in the 80s who..." sense.

And who rates aldermen or Wrigley hot dogs highly? Fair enough, in both cases, they are widely held in low esteem but might still be over-rated.

By the general logic, most wins are meaningless. What's the point of winning 77 games if you don't make the playoffs, all those wins are meaningless. Or if you win 105 when 94 would have been enough you've wasted everybody's time.

Let's just hope nobody points out how meaninless baseball is.

How dare you undermine my lazy spot-check of two players.

Since I did half as much work as you did, I'm hardly in a position to criticize.

Extending the list to 15... I ran all the players from Gehrig up on the career total list:
Ruth 520+
Aaron 512
Bonds 493
Mays 458
Manny 412
A-Rod 412
Thome 411
Griffey 402
Jackson 396
Robinson 396
Schmidt 381
McGwire 381
Mantle 375
Killebrew 375
Gehrig 372

Look at that - home runs hit for the Yankees really do count more!
   31. Randy Jones Posted: May 10, 2012 at 09:53 PM (#4128845)
A-Rod 412

This is clearly incorrect. Unclutch-Rod only hits HR's in garbage time and so this should obviously be 0.
   32. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: May 10, 2012 at 10:35 PM (#4128903)

Agreed.

The hitter could do the rumba on homeplate (to symbolize touching all four bases) and all baserunners could head straight to the dugout.

Great quote associated with that HR. Reggie said, "It was an insurance run, so I hit it to the Prudential building."
