Chi Trib/Sullivan: Stage set for Chicago Cubs’ organizational meetings

Cue 60 Minutes stopwatch:

With a new owner in place and a disappointing 2009 season in the rearview mirror, speculation is Jim Hendry will have one year to turn things around on the North Side.

But asked if he felt like he was “on the clock,” the Cubs general manager said he’ll approach this offseason like any other.

“I don’t ever feel any different about that,” Hendry said. “I put a lot of pressure on myself. We’ve had real good years, and we’ve had not-good years. We had it going really good in the right direction and this year had a hiccup.

“I’m certainly capable of leading the baseball organization to where everyone wants it to go, and if there comes a day when I’m not the right guy, then I don’t think I should be here anyhow.”

It'll be an interesting winter on the North Side. I hear rumors the Cubs are looking to add payroll - what does that mean specifically, though? Starting 2B Chone Figgins?

Probably Iwamura, as the article notes. But they're also looking to shed Bradley's contract (good luck with that).

If they eat $8-10 million, I could see an AL team that needs a DH picking him up. But good luck getting value in return, though.

Very little, as Ricketts explicitly said last week. So not nearly enough for Figgins (considering contracts that will go up next year plus arbitration for other guys), especially with very little money coming off the books (Harden and Gregg being the only significant ones).

Is trading Bradley for GMJ still possible?

It never was possible. And neither was trading it for Vernon Wells (yes, that rumor went around this weekend).

So the Cubs are looking for a "speedy leadoff hitter." Seems to me they do this every year. Why they feel the need, with Fukudome in tow, is beyond me. He's a perfectly decent leadoff man.

Is it a given that they won't try to keep Harden?

The Jays would take him, without the Cubs eating any salary.

The only catch would be that the Cubs would have to take Vernon Wells in return.

Iwamura to the Pirates, not the Cubs.

What makes you say that?

Speedy leadoff guy? Looks like it's Milton Bradley for Juan Pierre.

"What makes you say that?"

The fact that's being reported by Tampa papers, Pittsburgh papers, Fox Sports, and SI?

The deal is supposedly Jesse Chavez for Iwamura and a second (unknown) player.

Hm. Why?

"Hm. Why?"

Because the Pirates traded their starting 2B last offseason, have no upper-minors middle infield prospects, can afford to trade a generic righty reliever, and have plenty of payroll room for 2010?
