Chicago Sports: Black Sox archive suddenly surfaces (RR)

Woo-hoo!...Even Two Finger Carney gives the thumbs up on this amazing find!

A mysterious box of letters, memos and legal documents pertaining to the White Sox team accused of throwing the 1919 World Series—some of the papers thought to be lost since the middle of the last century—is bound for the auction block this week after being uncovered by two Chicago-area collectors.

The identity of the sellers is not being disclosed and the story of how the papers came to emerge is incomplete. The auction house, Mastro Auctions in Burr Ridge, says the owners probably bought the box at a file sale without knowing what was inside. The auction house would not go into detail about its origins.

Nevertheless, the sudden emergence of an archive of previously unknown documents pertaining to the 1919 Black Sox case has seized the imagination of archivists and historians.

Unfortunately as of right now we only get about two pages of Williams deposition to view. Hopefully when the Hall gets their hands on some copies of these papers we'll get to see more.

Also if you go to the mastro auction site they got listings and pictures for tons of baseball stuff up for auction.

Up for sale are the contracts for all 1955 and 1956 Milwaukee Braves players. Showing their yearly salaries, Aaron went from 10K in 1955 to 17K in 1956. I'm sure Cot's would like to see those.

If BBTF existed in 1955, I'm sure someone would have railed against the Braves on giving a 70% increase to a player that obviously had a "fluke season" (going from 104 OPS+ to 143 OPS+).

Of course, he wouldn't have a season as "bad" as 1955 for another 11 years...

Yep, when a 21 year old who had a 104 OPS+ the year before then posts a 143, everybody around here calls it a fluke.

Also up for auction is a Boston Red Sox team signed ball after the 1915 World Series. Tris Speaker, Babe Ruth, Harry Hooper, Carl Mays, . .

The ball belonged to Joe Wood who gave it to his wife.

Is anybody questioning the authenticity of these documents? Doesn't it seem a little fishy that all these important documents would show up in exactly the same place, ready for auction?

When important documents relating to one thing are located, they are quite frequently located in exactly the same place. I would think they have undergone some scrutiny.
