Chicago Sports: Rogers: Cy Young respect for Lackey lacking (RR)

Uh-oh, the last time Rogers came up with a formula…we had that nasty isomethane outbreak.

For the sake of argument, I put together a simple formula to compare the top four Cy Young vote-getters. It ranks them among each other in victories, losses, ERA, innings and strikeouts. Because I think ERA is the most important, I’ve given it twice the weight. That formula gives Sabathia a slight edge over Lackey and a significant edge over Beckett and Carmona, who would be tied for third.

If you weighed ERA three times as heavily as the other four stats, you would have a tie between Sabathia and Lackey, with Beckett dropping to a clear fourth.

Sabathia’s edge over the other guys comes down to leading the league innings and strikeouts. That achievement may have contributed to the Indians not going to the World Series, as Sabathia and Carmona clearly wore down during the championship series against Boston. Beckett looked the freshest of the Cy Young contenders in October—no wonder; he barely threw 200 innings during the regular season, the lowest total.

seriously ... if *i* could trade the soul-scarring effects of endorsing "adolf hitler" ... vs endorsing "phil rogers!!!" ... i'd be *ALL*" for "stepping-on-board" with der Lacky-Steiner"!!! RE-gardless! of how AWFUL! it made *me* feel in the morning!

I may be the biggest Lackey fan on this site and Sabathia/Beckett were each more deserving of the 2007 Cy Young award.

If it weren't for my horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college.

Jon Lester pitched even less than Beckett during the regular season and was even better in the World Series -- let's give him the Cy Young!

the only thing that is lacking is consistency in voting. in the 21st century alone, we have had different winners based upon Pitching Triple Crown, taking the team to the playoffs, IP leader, Wins leader, and every year it's a different category that trumps another.

If you weighed ERA three times as heavily

Also, if you omitted the letters "B" and "C" from the alphabet, and chose to award the Cy Young in alphabetical order by last name, Lackey would have the edge over Sabathia.

Or, you could assign each of the four pitcher's names to each of the four legs of a turtle, take a steaming¹ #### on its shell and see which leg retracts first. In the event of a four way tie, you would revert to the alphabetical method previously mentioned.

¹#### must be taken outdoors on a cold day in order to get the steaming effect.

I don't know Rev, I'll have to issue a challenge for the title of "biggest Lackey fan on this site". I think he was much more deserving than Beckett. I see Lackey/Sabathia as a tossup, I'm OK with the big guy winning.

I think Lackey edges Beckett because of IP & ERA, but it's plenty close enough to not really care.

This reminds me of a conversation I had the other day. Did you know that there are a bunch of Hitlers living in America right now? Apparently there is even Adolf Hitlers as well. Do you know how hard it must be for anybody to take their phone calls seriously?

Really? I just bought insurance from an Adolf Hitler over the phone.

As discussed in the Sabathia Wins thread, I don't really see how you can put Beckett above him.
