Chicago Sun-Times: Podsednik’s return to 2005 excellence begins in his mind

“Block all highways, stop all traffic, and call every law enforcement agency in the state…It came from another world!”

‘‘When Scott is on his game, he’s one of the premier leadoff hitters in baseball,’’ hitting coach Greg Walker said. ‘‘And they are very difficult to find. I mean, let’s look around baseball and see who else is out there. There’s not many on this earth that can do what he does.

‘‘We’ve seen him do it. We’ve won a world championship with him as our leadoff hitter. For a majority of the 2005 season, he was unbelievable. He just has to get back to doing that, nothing more.’‘

WTF

Veteran Darin Erstad is now in the mix, with the ability to lead off as well as play left and center field. Brian Anderson can have a say in what goes on if he puts his lackluster '06 season behind him.

I guess this is true if you define the "ability to lead off" as the possibility that your name may be legally placed on the top slot of your team's lineup and you are subsequently both willing and able to enter the field of play and go stand in the batter's box at the appointed time.

Mushmouth, insert "and are fast" between "time" and the period and I think you may have it.

Ozzie keeps talking about batting Iguchi 7th, also. WTF? Why do you want one of your better hitters to get fewer ABs?

My excellence begins and ends in my mind. So there.

I don't pay any attention to those sorts of things at this point in Spring Training.

Last year at this time, the talk was that Iguchi would be batting sixth, and Uribe would be batting second. That didn't pan out. That's what Spring Training is for, to mess around with different ideas that probably won't work.

I suspect that will be the case with Pods too.

Pods is excellent in Shooty's mind?

Sure. I think collecting Pogs is excellent. I have all the Looney Tunes characters and all the honchos from the Department of the Interior.

I always wear a honcho when it's raining.

Well, it's important to keep your kumquats dry.

Well, it's important to keep your kumquats dry.

More important to keep 'em warm or the juice loses its potency.

not too much to ask, is it?

not too much to ask, is it?

Well, it's the right attitude for a hitting coach to have, that's for sure.

I'm pissed that the Sox brought Podsednik back at all, but if he's around, I'm glad that they're trying to get him to a place where he's at least somewhat useful.

not too much to ask, is it?

Sure. Miguel Dilone is still chasing 1980 from what I hear.
