Chicago Tribune: Edmonds patient while Cubs, fans adjust (RR)

When [Edmonds] ran onto the field in the first inning, he was cheered for being in Cub blue.

When he struck out with the bases loaded in the fifth inning, he was booed as if he were still in Cardinal red.

Has he ever had an ovation in Chicago before? “No, and I’ve been booed louder,” Edmonds said after playing in his first game since the Padres released him.

From foe to friend to failure—a rather short honeymoon—all within 24 hours.

“That’s what it’s all about,” he said. “It’s baseball. I’d rather have that than a bunch of people watching the game quietly.”
...
He threw some balls into the bleachers to make new friends, realizing, “I could look back in the outfield and not get screamed at.”

If (when?) the Cubs cut ties with Edmonds, they should do so by having Z bean him with a fastball to recreate the atmosphere of that July 2004 game.

I've seen that game mentioned here a few times and this latest reference got me thinking: I have more vivid memories of specific games and moments from 2004 than any other season. I remember a lot of moments from various games over the years, but when it comes to 2004 Cubs baseball, I can recall things like where I was and what I was doing during certain games.

Maybe it's because unlike any other season of recent vintage, 2004 was a year in which the Cubs weren't expected just to make it to October, but cakewalk it to the World Series.

There will be no adjustment. The sooner this ends, the better.

Hey Jim, you know the best way to be accepted by Cubs fans? Don't suck. Too late? Oh, sorry.

What irks me is that somehow the Cubs would never even think of signing Barry Bonds, but Jim Edmonds? Bring him on! Edmonds lands somewhere between Garvey and Bonds on the ####### meter.

The scary thing is that the addition of JEd brings the Cubs' class per player (cpp) up a full standard deviation.

So ... one of the supposed reasons to pick up Edmonds was to get another leftie in the lineup for "balance". So what do we do? We bat Fukudome and Edmonds back-to-back.

But hey, he got a hit ... what more can we hope for?
