Chicago Tribune: Kerry Wood still suffering discomfort (RR)

Both the Tribune and Sun-Times are floating Samardzija’s name as a callup, which is why I post this.  Of course, it could be a bluff for trade leverage.  We’ll see.

Kerry Wood’s blister remains bothersome, if not yet disabling. He had to ease his way through a scheduled bullpen session Wednesday, throwing only changeups, as the Cubs studied ways to replace him for the next week, if not longer.

General Manager Jim Hendry continues to explore the market for trades, evaluating Oakland right-hander Huston Street and Colorado lefty Brian Fuentes, among others. But the guy apparently getting the most immediate consideration is Jeff Samardzija, the former Notre Dame receiver who is pitching well as a starter for Triple-A Iowa.

Samardzija (25 strikeouts, five walks, 13 hits in 19 innings over his last three starts) is somewhat on schedule for a promotion, having not worked since Sunday.
...
“With a lot of guys you might have questions about, ‘How’s he going to handle (the pressure)?’” Cubs assistant general manager Randy Bush said. “But with (Samardzija), you just think he’ll handle it well.”

I think it's Sim-ard-jya

25 strikeouts, five walks, 13 hits in 19 innings over his last three starts

Where did Samardzija find those strikeouts?

2006: 5.1 K/9
2007: 4.13 K/9
2008 in AA: 5.2 K/9

Despite poor numbers, the Cubs have continued to promote him. Now he looks like an actual prospect.

Oh, jesus christ.

Or should I say, "For the love of Touchdown Jesus."

At least we know they'll have a deep threat then...

Samardzija is going to be further proof that:

A) Sometimes a prospect with great stuff but consistenly mediocre results can suddenly "get it" and deliver on their promise.

B) Anything can happen in 19 innings.

At least we know they'll have a deep threat then...

1) could he double as a defensive replacement in CF?
2) can any of the bullpen lefites a) not suck b) play a decent outfield?

We could run a bizzare RF/CF/Closer platoon.

I believe it's pronounced like it's spelled.

Even his pre-last-3-starts peripherals were better than his numbers at lower levels (not by a lot, but still -- better) -- even excepting his last 19 innnings/25 Ks -- his K rate still took a pretty big jump once he hit AAA (40 in 37 IP overall).

Who knows...

He's probably at the height of his value right now, might as well take a chance, give him a handful of major league innings, maybe see if you can flip him for something.

Wikipedia sez:

Samardzija signed a five-year deal to play baseball full-time, starting with the Chicago Cubs. The deal has a no-trade clause and a club option for a sixth and seventh year.

Jesus, indeed. Touchdown Jesus, not so sure. That contract might make him hard to trade. Doesn’t he have to be on the 40 man roster because of it?

With the blister on his right index finger still not healed, Chicago Cubs closer Kerry Wood was placed on the 15-day disabled list prior to Thursday’s game against the Florida Marlins.

It marks the 12th time in his career that Wood has been on the DL. He was unable to pitch in the All-Star Game because of the blister problem and has not appeared in a game since June 11.
...
The Cubs will make a corresponding move before Friday’s contest against the Marlins.
