Chicago Tribune: Wood’s blister slow to heal, so he’s headed to DL (RR)

Hendry broke out the Moises Alou joke, so this had to get posted.

[Kerry] Wood was backdated on the DL the allowable 10 days and will be eligible to return Tuesday in Milwaukee. Hendry said Wood is making progress, but the area where the blister popped is still too tender for Wood to let loose without any irritation.
...
Wood’s loss is likely to be Jeff Samardzija’s gain. The former Notre Dame star is 4-1 with a 3.13 earned-run average in six starts at Triple-A Iowa. He is slated to be called up Friday to make his major-league debut this weekend
...
Discussing remedies, Hendry mentioned ointments and pickle juice before adding: “I haven’t asked him if he tried the Moises Alou approach…”

Alou believed urinating on his hands made them harder, so he could get a better grip on the bat.

“I already tried that a couple of weeks ago,” Wood said with a laugh.

Alou can't wait to shake Kerry's hand

The Trib story says they may call up Samardzija (or whatever that ND guy's name is) who seems to be putting up some good numbers. I thought all you prospect hounds told me he was a bum.

Redacted.

I will root for Samardzija. I have to think he has a deal with the Cubs to give MLB a go quickly, so both can call it quits if it doesn't work out, giving Samardzija a chance to sign a football contact while he is still young and able. Could be a new model we are looking at for 2 sport athletes that played college football at a high level.

Samardzija's stats

All through the minors he's posted weak peripherals, earned an inexplicable promotion, and proceeded to do slightly better against the tougher competition. Frankly, it's kind of bizarre.

IT's the steroids kicking in.

Mac, Jurko, and Harry on Chicago sports radio were jokingly suggesting yesterday that Samardzija should be allowed to join the Bears, since he's the property of a Chicago sports franchise. They opined that he would probably be one of the top three receivers immediately.

Not revealed by the Cubs: the blister is actually on his labrum.

Maybe they could work out a trade, since Devin Hester doesn't seem to want to play for the Bears. He'd be a better speed threat off the bench than Ronny Cedeno.

Samardzija's got good stuff, but his command of it was a big issue at AA. I really think he'd be better as a reliever, myself.
