Chien-Ming Wang apologizes for extra-marital affair during news conference

That was either one hell of a news conference, or the Washington Post headline editor should be fired.

“Two years ago I made a very serious mistake. I will not and cannot excuse myself for this mistake,” Wang said, according to translated accounts. “To my family and friends who love and support me, I will not even dare to ask for your forgiveness, but I want to express my most deep apology.”

“To my family and friends who love and support me, I will not even dare to ask for your forgiveness, but I want to express my most deep apology.”

I cannot even begin to imagine an American ballplayer, or indeed, any American celebrity talking like this. American celebrities say things like, "Mistakes were made, and I'm sorry if you were offended. Respect my privacy at this difficult time, and let's all just move on!"

That's either a bad headline or one heckuva memorable press conference!

There's one more bit of evidence why everyone thinks you're quite clever, Dag.

Well, he's already one up on most of the Washington notables who have messed around.

And just like American celebrities he doesn't really mean it.

Where's Cleon Jones when you need him?

Didn't Earl Weaver have sex during a press conference once, back in the day?

What can he do? The ladies love Wang.

This is the biggest headline in Taiwan right now, it's bigger than ANY OTHER NEWS at all.

For me to get outraged, he has to [frak Strasburg's gf] + [shoot Jayson Werth with an airgun] + [plot with Mike Morse to get rid of the manager] + [something else d-baggy] for me to get angry.

It's not that Chelsea fans have no moral compass, it's just that we have more tolerant moral compass than everybody else.

'Zactly. It's just harder to tell through an interpreter.

#1 Anybody have the text of Cleon Jones' apology? As I recall it was pretty cringe-worthy.

#9 I wonder if they'd have been fault tolerant with John Terry had things not worked out so implausibly well.

#11, no, but this is from SI's vault:

Met Outfielder Cleon Jones was called a disgrace to baseball after he managed to get arrested for sleeping nude in a van with a woman not his wife on a street in the middle of St. Petersburg, Fla. at 5 a.m.

...The indecent exposure charges against Jones were dropped (the police, after all, were the only citizens who bothered to peer into the van), but Grant fined Jones $2,000, four times as much as a Met had ever been assessed before, and then had the temerity to make Jones apologize abjectly in public.

Grant, the picture of self-righteousness, hauled Jones, accompanied by his wife, before a press conference so that Jones could confess his sin. "We have to restore the Mets' image," said Grant, who meanwhile was making quite an image of himself. It seemed appropriate to Grant at one point to tell, in the presence of the chastened Joneses, a story about a man who wanted to have 11 women in one night.

"With a woman not his wife."

The comments about the headline remind me of a story Houston Chronicle sportswriter John Lopez once told about his days as a student at Texas A&M reporting for the school newspaper. He was talking to head basketball coach Shelby Metcalf and mentioned that he was about to get married but would be back in time to cover the Southwest Conference tournament. 'You're not going on a honeymoon?' Metcalfe asked. Lopez, who was trying to make a name for himself in the business and didn't want to miss an important event, replied that they may take a trip in the summer, but weren't going anywhere at this time. 'Son', Metcalfe replied, 'if you're skipping your honeymoon to cover this tournament, either there's something you don't know about honeymoons, or something I don't know about basketball!'

I didn't know the Cleon Jones story and after reding number 6 I was wondering how shoe polish made sense in this story.

No, but he did poke the voluptuous Alice Sweet in the middle of a Memorial Stadium tomato patch.

voluptuous Alice Sweet

Now there's a cultivar I've never heard of.

Agree with #9. Wang is still as big of a celebrity in Taiwan as Ruth was in the mid-1930s and Mantle was in the late 1960s.

Apple Daily has videos from the press conference, and it seems pretty heartfelt. But maybe I am just naturally biased towards Wang. And yes, Apple Media is owned by NextMedia, so there is an animation. (That particular video is about the possibility of blackmail in the apology.)

Clearly he was only thinking with himself.
