Chris Perez: ‘I don’t understand’ what Red Sox have done with Bard

An overflow of good converters to bad.

“Give the guy a role, and let him stay there,” Perez said at Monday’s All-Star interview session. “What are you trying to get out of him as a starter? I don’t understand.”

Bard served as Papelbon’s setup man last year, but the Red Sox moved him to the rotation over the winter. They sent him to the minor leagues after 10 starts, and shortly thereafter moved him back to the bullpen.

Since then, Bard has had a few good outings, but just as many where he was completely unable to find the strike zone. Overall, in 13 appearances for Triple-A Pawtucket, he has an 8.16 ERA, with 14 hits and 10 walks in 14 1/3 innings.

“He’s going to be fine,” Papelbon insisted. “I really think he’s going to be fine. He’s a pretty mentally strong kid. Sitting with him in the bullpen, I saw the days he got beat up [last year], and how he came back from them.”

Did someone tell Perez that Bard wanted to be a starter?

And I, in turn, don't understand why Chris Perez is at the All-Star game.

Yeah, I was really pretty shocked about that too. I expected Cabrera, thought Choo had a non-zero chance to get the call, maybe Kipnis if he was lucky.

Those 24 saves are nice and shiny, but he's been no better than the second-best reliever on the team behind Pestano.

Maybe if managers would do something realistic like take the most valuable/best pitchers on the all-star teams, instead of a club full of releievrs, the Perez thing wouldn't happen.

I will NOT be able to 'splain to my grandchildren in 20 years why so-and-so should be HoF pitcher when he only made 3 all-star teams (i.e., Tim Hudson), when some relievers from our era made 5 or more.
