Cincinnati Enquirer: Dye still may be in play

Just hope Dye doesn’t wear #2 as a Red…

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said Saturday that the offseason remains quiet.

“Most clubs shut it down on the holidays,” he said.

As for talk that the Reds could be interested in outfielder Jermaine Dye, whom the Chicago White Sox are reported to be shopping, Jocketty said:

“I’m not going to comment. But we have talked to the White Sox about some players. Nothing is close.”

The way tampering rules work, Jocketty cannot say he’s pursuing Dye. But in the case of San Diego shortstop Khalil Greene, Jocketty was comfortable shooting down the rumor.

Who plays in the OF for the White Sox if Dye is traded? Quentin + ? + ?, with the ?'s being potentially answered by some combination of Anderson, Owens, and Wise, doesn't instill much confidence. (Not that I think the team will enter the '09 season with that arrangement.)

This article says Chicago will offer Cabrera (Type A) arbitration, but won't offer it to Uribe or Griffey (Type Bs).

My first guess at "Anderson" in #1 was Garret.

I thought the White Sox brain trust hated Brian, with some justification.

EDIT:
Jocketty has added Bonifay, Bill Bavasi, Mike Squires, Jerry Walker and Jamie Quirk to the front office. Bonifay and Bavasi are former GMs.

Oh, dear.

Fields goes to left (opening up third for Betemit), with Quentin moving over to right. Anderson is probably the top internal candidate for center.

At this point, they know what they're going to get from him, at least, and his carousing days seem to be behind him, which was the thing that bothered Guillen.

That would make the most sense, but that probably won't happen.

I think the Sox see Betemit as taking over Juan Uribe's job as utility infielder - they haven't been talking him up as a starter. They didn't like Fields as an outfielder - unless he falls on his face or Dayan Viciedo blows everyone away in Spring Training, Fields should be the starting 3B.

If the Sox move Dye, they either bring in a cheap corner OF from the scrap heap or you see an Anderson/Wise platoon in left.

Unless the Sox bring in a centerfielder from outside, I think we'll see a lot of Wise and/or Owens out there, with Anderson as the fourth outfielder.

Do the Reds see themselves as contenders for 2009? I was surprised to hear rumors that they were interested in Dye.

Normally, this would be the occasion for a mini-mental status exam. However, Jocketty was born in the same year as Dave Winfield and Dwight Evans (1951), and is only 8 years older than I am. I take this personally.

The Bonifay and Bavasi team gives new meaning to "Killer Bs".

I RTFA and no hint of whom the Reds would be giving up for Dye. I have to believe Williams wouldn't do it without getting a major-league-ready player in return, and I can't imagine who they'd give up for Dye. Cordero, maybe, if Jenks is out the door. Depends on what Williams and Jocketty think they're going to do in other areas, I suppose.

I heard Homer Bailey plus.

Other published rumors have Homer Bailey as being the centerpiece of a deal.

Bailey, eh? Hmm. That would suggest to me a bold moving of Vazquez somewhere to free up $$ for an OF...coughRamirezcough...stranger things have happened.
