Cincinnati.com/Fay: Lincoln in the 5th Spot? Alonso at Catcher?

Gotta love Dusty:

These come from the sometimes-managers-say-the-darnedest-things file. Dusty Baker was asked about the fifth spot in the rotation Saturday at the Select-A-Seat event at Great American Ball Park.

Mike Lincoln hasn’t started in the majors in 10 years, and has been battling injuries for the last few years. Yonder Alonso may be built like a catcher, but the odds that he can actually hold together long enough to learn how to BE one given his recent injury history aren’t exactly good.

There are times when I really wonder if Jocketty and Baker have a clue.

There are times when I really wonder if Jocketty and Baker have a clue.

It's a bad sign when even the commenters on the original article are aghast.

For example:

Dusty picked a fine time to start sniffing glue again.

Mike Lincoln is to pitching what Willy Taveras is to hitting, terrible.

Sorry for the rant, I just have too much respect for the catcher position at the major league level to believe that a guy, even as talented as Alonso, can decide to be a catcher just "pick it up along the way" only a year or so from cracking a big league roster.

The last time Mike Lincoln started a game, he was yanked after giving up a grand slam to Richie Sexson that scored Manny Ramirez, Travis Fryman, and Russ Branyan. Johan Santana came in to relieve him, and got the win. Which was Santana's 2nd career win.

His catcher that day? Marcus Jensen.

If they're delving into "batshit crazy" for ideas, they may as well fill their starting shortstop position with Barry Larkin and solidify his HOF case.

I love this part of the baseball season. Everything is possible.

And now you know... the rest of the story.

That's a great line. I need to start using that.

When I read the headline I actually thought Brad Lincoln and tried to figure out when the Reds got him. Mike Lincoln? What?

In retrospect that post should have ended with

"That pitcher's name? Johan Santana."
