C.J.: Baseball fans get their rankings in the paperback “In Pursuit of Pennants” - StarTribune.com

Dan should have stormed out of the interview when he was asked this question!!

Q: Do you ever find baseball games boring?

A: I have a 20-game season ticket to the Twins and I really enjoy going, but certainly I would say that these 3-2 counts start to get a little bit tedious. It’s nice to see the ball get put in play once in a while. I love watching games but games where there are a lot of strikeouts and walks get tedious. The pitcher-batter matchup has become much more the focus of baseball. Used to be strikeouts were interesting, but you’d get a 2-1 count and a player would put the ball in play.

Way back when I was a boy, there were a few fireballing relief pitchers like Gossage and Lee Smith who stuck out a lot of guys, but even the elite relievers were right around a whiff per inning. Sometimes a bit over, sometimes a bit below, but not average 15 per 9 like the strikeout masters today. For the most part bullpens were staffed by junk ballers who might only strike out 4-5 per 9, but would give you multiple innings.

Last year MLB averaged 8.3 K/9. In 1982, only three starting pitchers exceeded that rate - Ryan, Carlton, and Mario Soto.

When the strikeout is a rarity it's fun to watch someone like Nolan Ryan rack up a 15 strikeout game. Or a Lee Smith come in to save the game and strike out the side. There's not much excitement left in the whiff when every pitcher is doing it. They are just doing what we've come to expect.
