Clayton Kershaw strikes out 12 in Dodgers’ 7-2 victory over Diamondbacks | LA Times

That the Dodgers reported for work in last place in the National League West for the first time in three years did not particularly worry the men in uniform. It was April, after all. They would win one of these days, and Clayton Kershaw would be their pitcher on this day.

“If there’s anyone you want to take the mound in a game like this, it’s Clayton,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.

A game like this? Three consecutive losses overall, five consecutive losses to the Arizona Diamondbacks, and maybe the manager really was branding the 14th game of a 162-game schedule as a must-win.

"A game like this" could just mean "baseball."

In a game like this, where people are throwing and hitting baseballs, you probably want the guy who is the best at throwing baseballs. --Dave Roberts paraphrased

Kershaw's career WHIP is now at exactly 1.00 . He dipped below it for a few starts last season, but went back over in September.
Easy Ed Walsh and Addie Joss from the olden days are the only two with better career WHIPS (min. 1,000 IP).
I suppose a reliever or two like Kimbrel might eventually log 1,000 innings and finish under 1.00, but it's hard to imagine another starting
pitcher accomplishing such an amazing feat.
Pitching in Dodger Stadium certainly helps. Is there an "Adjusted WHIP" stat out there to go with ERA+ ?
I hope Kershaw gets his career WHIP low enough in the next few seasons to absorb the higher WHIPs of his decline phase.
Keep that WHIP under 1.00. Mariano Rivera needed one more out recorded with no baserunners to be at exactly 1.00 .
I think that intentional walks should NOT be included in WHIP and hit-by-pitches SHOULD be included, to make it an exact stat.

IIRC, there was even some BBTF lamentation about that when Rivera was taken out of his last game with two out in the 9th, in a bit of ceremony to give Mo one final ovation at Yankee Stadium.

Oops, I didn't read what I quoted in #4 very carefully. Isn't it one more out to be under 1.000? BB-Ref has Mo at exactly 1.000.

1283 2/3 IP vs 1,284 H+BB.
