Clemens Award ceremony to take ‘low key’ approach

By calling it the Calvin Schiraldi Award.

With all the attention surrounding its namesake, the Roger Clemens Award will take a “low-key approach” this year in making its presentation to the top pitcher in Division I college baseball, organizers said Tuesday.

The award, which is billed as the college version of the Cy Young, will be presented in a private ceremony later this month, award chairman Ray Mitchell said.

“It’s been decided to take a low-key approach,” Mitchell said.

...Mitchell, who also is the chairman of the Greater Houston Baseball Association, said the event would like to remain in partnership with Clemens.

“Our relationship with Roger Clemens has been outstanding,” Mitchell said. “There hasn’t been anything we needed to promote a charity he hasn’t been there promoting. He’s been a willing participant. We’d like to remain a part of that.”

This would be funnier if the chairman's first name was different.

Does Clemens throw the award at the winner as he's coming on stage to accept it?

Clemens provided one of the great quotes of recent memory in that incredibly uncomfortable 60 Minutes interview:

"People who know me know what I'm about."

I now use it in any situation when I'm asked a question that makes me even remotely squeamish.
