Cleveland Plain Dealer: Choo hears boos for wrong reason

Outfielder Shin-Soo Choo, promoted to the big leagues Monday by the Indians, has heard boos before.

Last week, the boos took on a disturbing tone. When Class AAA Buffalo, the Indians’ top farm club, played in Toledo, fans apparently associated him with Seung-Hui Cho, the Virginia Tech senior who killed 32 of his schoolmates before killing himself April 16.

So that's why Tribe fans have been booing Trot Nixon...

That doesn't even make any sense. It appears there are just some jackasses in Toledo. I highly doubt people actually associated him with Cho.

No way people are that stupid and insensitive

Yes. They're called the Toledo Rockets. But that's not important right now.

The fans and media have hated Korean players long before now. Just ask Bryun Hyung Kim and Hee Seop Choi. I've got no clue why, though.

Choo's spirit of juche should get him through this.

No they are saying Boo-urns.

They like players you can scrute.

How retarded. Did Lee Lacy get a lot of crap after John Wayne Gacy was caught?

I haven't RTFA, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if some yahoos (no pun intended) singled this guy out because of Cho. I still remember meeting my wife's cousin and hearing him, a Long Island Yankee fan, describing a trip to Chicago where he took in a Cubs game and saw Mark Prior collide with "that Chinese guy, what's his name, Sum Dum ###?" A lot of people don't really think of the players as people, especially when they're on the field.

I don't understand, how do we know they weren't saying "Chooooooooo"?

Yes, people are that stupid.

A family member received a flurry of death threats and bomb threats over the phone due to a superficial name similarity to a terrorist. Over a period of many months

After Son of Sam was captured, the owner of Sam the dog said he received threats. (Maybe the dog did too)

Yes, people are that stupid.

I agree, unfortunately, although I'd say "a few people." I would be quite surprised if some of the booing of Choo was not based on Va Tech.

They were so stupid they were booing Cliff Lee, too.

Some Cleveland fans even boo Chick Corea. Then again, who doesn't hate jazz fusion.
