Closer Matt Capps to be back with Twins in 2012

This would never happen if baseball had a salaried Capps.

The Twins are finalizing a deal to re-sign closer Matt Capps, who struggled last year when handed the closer’s role during the season. Two sources with knowledge of negotiations confirmed the deal.
Capps was 4-7 with a 4.25 ERA and 15 saves for the Twins last season. He replaced Nathan as closer in April but lost the job later in the season. It was discovered later on that Capps was pitching with a sore forearm that affected his slider but didn’t want to use it as an excuse.
UPDATE:Capps to have physical Tuesday. He’ll earn $4.5 million in 2012. Option in 2013 is for $6 million, or a $250,000 buyout.  Performance bonues are in the deal too.

The Twins turned down a free supplemental draft pick for letting the most hated player on the team return. What a stupid decision. The guy looks like he sweats Crisco.

And to think that we (the Nats, that is) got our catcher of the future in Wilson Ramos for this guy.

And to think that we (the Nats, that is) nearly lost our catcher of the future in Wilson Ramos to Venezuelan kidnappers. But that's a different story.

He's not going to be the reason MIN succeeds or fails next year. When he wasn't hurt he wasn't bad, it's only $4.5m and it's not like there's a grove of outstanding young bullpen arms being blocked by this. There are many other more important issues to be dealt with than this guy, and frankly it closes the book on something that the old school guys (Gardy, Ryan) think about a lot (closing games) and frees them to go work on things that probably matter more (OF, SP).

It's not only $4.5M, it's $4.75M and a supplemental 1st round pick.

They could have had Bedard for the same money.

Does Terry Ryan care about closers that much? I think Gardy has come to rely on them, but I always got the impression TR wasn't overly concerned about them. He inherited Aguilera, but later it was simply a promotion of setup men: Trombley, Hawkins, Guardado, and Nathan. Remember, it was Bill Smith that re-signed Nathan to that 3/41 extension a few years ago, and TR let Nathan walk this winter. I guess a one-year, $4.75 million deal isn't necessarily a big investment these days, but Capps looked cooked last season, and I would have preferred a more creative solution.
