Colby Lewis agrees to extension

The Texas Rangers and pitcher Colby Lewis have agreed to terms on a contract extension for the 2013 season.

The deal has a base salary of $2 million and could be worth an additional $4 million in incentives, sources said.

Lewis will miss the remainder of this season following surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon in his pitching elbow. He is not wearing a brace on the arm anymore and said Saturday that he expects to start slowly building up arm strength, possibly as early as later this week or early next week.

Smart move and this is a good deal for Texas. Lewis hasn't been very healthy this year, so I am not sure how much he would have gotten on the open market.

Yeah, no downside here. Worst case they're out $2M and showed some loyalty and goodwill to a guy who's meant a lot to them.

If he can come back and pitch like the Colby Lewis of the past 3 seasons, it's a steal.

I like it too. I think we have a quorum of Ranger-fan Primates on this issue, and the thread can now go toward Star Trek or the Beatles without harm.
