Courant: Doyle: Mouse Takes Fans Far Beyond Crumbs

No, no…this has nothing to do with Disney’s lawsuit against Zap Comix…it’s a look at the Yankee/Red Sox blogging scene.

There was time when Connecticut baseball fans might have felt detached from their teams in Boston or New York. But in this age of 24/7 access to information and opinion, fans living along the rivalry’s dividing line are as immersed and informed as those residing in the shadows of Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium.

Much of the access starts with a click of the mouse.

“Baseball is a sport driven by two things that are natural to the Internet: conversation and data,” Quinnipiac assistant professor of journalism Rich Hanley said. “The conversation is no longer controlled by the mediators, the sports writers and columnists who gave fans insight into the game and its players. Instead, much of that access comes directly from the players in the form of blogs and fans whose voices are no longer restricted to neighborhood bars and sports talk radio.”

Despite that statement, I really disagree with the overall point of the article, that increased access has resulted in the "hotness" of the rivalry in the battleground state being increased as well. I've lived here for about ten years now, and know people who have lived here far longer; I don't know if I could say with any certainty that the current information society has increased the intensity of the fandom.

You might be able to measure the hotness of the NYY-Bos rivalry by the harmonic mean of the teams wins. Here's a list of all the seasons that number tops 90:

1998    101.83
1978    99.50
2004    99.48
1977    98.48
2003    97.91
2002    97.74
1942    97.74
1939    96.76
1949    96.50
1999    95.96
1950    95.96
2005    95.00
1948    94.99
1946    94.74
1904    93.48
1938    93.18
1986    92.43
1951    92.17
1980    91.92
1941    91.72
2006    91.17
1953    90.89
1956    90.03

It's been relatively hot recently.

I'm not sure if you can mathematically quantify it it, but if you could, rivalry intensity is a function of

A. A harmonic mean (or a similar measure) of the two teams winning percentages.

and, B. geographical proximity.

The teams have to play each other, too. I think that factor A is greater than factor B. The Yanks and Royals had a nice little rivalry in the late 70s.
