Croix De Candlestick: Yet Another Argument About Why Brandon Belt Should Play

Belt seat legislation strictly enforced…seemingly since 1968.

This of course brings me back to the draconian standards that Bochy has instituted for Belt, as evidenced by a choice quote that comes to us from Andrew Baggarly:

“Pressed further on Belt, Bochy made it clear he is not interested in developing players who aren’t ready.”

And by “not ready” I’m assuming Bochy meant “had ten at-bats and didn’t get a hit in every single one of them.”  Now I’m no manager, but the idea that our manager isn’t interested in developing players seems a tad counter-intuitive to what a Major League team is for.  You know what the best way to learn how to hit Major League pitching is?  I’ll give you a hint, it involves hitting against Major League pitching.  But now that Aubrey Huff has had one game where he hit a home run, there’s a good chance Belt is ticketed back to Fresno.

...The real terror strikes when you imagine how the careers of Mays or Pedroia would have gone had Bruce Bochy been their manager.  Mays’ request to be back in AAA would have been honored by Boch’ faster than you can “Say Hey” and one of the most prodigious careers in the history of sports likely never would have taken place.  Pedroia’s horrendous first month would have seen him benched instead of winning the AL MVP the very next season.  As a manager, if you claim that you’re not interested in “developing players who aren’t ready,” you’re not doing your job.

I salute the legion of fantasy baseball players who again overpaid for Brandon Belt based on a second straight season of irrational expectations of playing time, deserved or not.

The player comps - well, what can anyone say, really.

I will mildly defend Bochy in theory (and in context). He's got a team with a chance to win a division. If you're a strong enough team then, sure, you try to mix in some development with performance. But generally playing guys who aren't "ready" isn't conducive to winning a division.

Like I said, in theory. The problem here is that it's quite likely that Belt is better than Huff right now. They have also managed to find as much playing time for Blanco, Burriss, and nearly Brett Pill (a 27-year-old with mediocre minor-league numbers) -- that's doing something wrong.

Count me as one of those fantasy owners. I kept him at $4 in an NL only league, so I guess it's not an overpay. But I just don't understand why Bochy is Dusty-ing this kid.

At this point, they should trade him for someone Bochy *will* use. As Walt pointed out, Belt's probably better than Huff, et al right now. But we may never know.

Is this not Bochy prima facie? At least Huff is still better than Eli Whiteside.

Belt wasn't even allowed to PH tonight. He was on deck in the 9th, but after Burriss reached base to lead off the inning, Belt was pulled back for Theriot, who failed to execute a bunt, but then got a single on a full count hit and run. This is after Gregor Blanco was the first bat off the bench to PH for Zito in the 7th inning.

Has there been any confirmation that Belt actually was in the on-deck circle? I think it was some clubhouse dude with a mask.

This really is just sad.

It's frustrating but I'm having a hard time getting too upset about it. Belt clearly has a huge hole in his swing which opposing pitchers take advantage of. Yes, he's been jerked around a lot but people are acting like this was a decision made over 10 at bats- he had over 200 at bats last year and hit .225, with almost three times as many strikeouts as walks. As was mentioned in #2, this isn't a season where they can spend the year hoping he develops. And I also disagree with the people saying he's 'probably' better than Huff at this point- based on what?

And nine home runs, producing them at a faster rate than anyone on the roster not named Sandoval or Beltran. You can see why a fans of a team with that offense would be willing to take the risk of investing a full time starting spot on that.

Based on Huff not being a consistently good hitter since 2004. Based on Huff stinking last year. Based on Huff being 35. Based on Huff being projected (ZiPS) to a 103 OPS+ while Belt is projected to a 121. I'm not sure I'd rather have Huff over Derrek Lee and Lee's out of a job.

Besides all of the things Walt said, the fact Belt had a higher OPS than Huff last year is pretty telling.

Looks like Bochy's been reading the Dusty Baker book on young hitters. Always have a wily veteran backup, and unless they come out of the gate looking like the second coming of Ted Williams, then find a spot on the bench.

(Of course, Dusty said it was in part because when he was a veteran player he appreciated managers who let him keep playing over young prospects because they acknowledged he had "earned" that right by virtue of being a veteran. No idea if that's also Bochy's MO.)

It's a really bad idea to try to parse a paraphrase. Despite the fact that the writer goes on to use the phrase "not ready" in quotes, it's not at all clear that Bochy ever said those words.

Methinks if Willy continued to hit .477 and slug .799 in AAA he probably would get a second chance, even from Bochy.
