CSN Bay Area/Urban: Buck Baffled by A’s Mixed Messages

As well he should be:

Because anyone who’s followed the team knows only this about the strange situation: The A’s, who buried Buck like an old bone shortly after he asked to rest a tweaked oblique in Texas last May, have continued to pile dirt on him all winter.

He is the invisible outfielder.

He’s less than an afterthought to the A’s, who have sent message after unflattering message to Buck over the past eight months.

The messages, delivered via demotions, challenges to his work ethic and manhood, silent treatments and, most recently, the signings of Coco Crisp and Gabe Gross and the rumors linking the A’s to Johnny Damon, have Buck’s head spinning—if not on the verge of exploding.

It seems to me that there’s still a lot of “spit on it and get back in there” when it comes to injuries and that there needs to be more of a middle ground taken when a player reports that he’s hurting.

Torn baffled by picking Buck in first round of DMB league he cares about; punishment lasts years

Yeah, I'm baffled too. Baffled as to why the A's have done so little to support and cultivate the talent of the one guy they've produced in the last 8 years who looks like he could be an offensive force (129 OPS+ his rookie year). Okay, the dude was hurt in 08 and didn't/couldn't contribute (he was great in Sept. once he got healthy). Why bury him last year? They were sitting him right from the beginning of the season in favor of Nomar, and sometimes even Rajai Davis (who ended up being good, but had nothing remotely comparable to what Buck had at the time).

I'd like to say that if Buck starts hitting like it's 2007, he'll get PT, but I have no idea what the A's are thinking with Crisp and Gross either, and in recent years merit and PT in the Oakland OF do not appear correlated. That said, Buck wasn't great with the bat in 2008, and was downright terrible in 2009. He doesn't merit a spot on the 25-man at this time.

As well, there's a difference between resting an occasional injury and missing a significant chunk of time every year because of injury. Doesn't mean you're faking it, but reliably being able to take the field is a skill. Buck games by year (all levels)

2005 .. 41
2006 .. 84
2007 .. 84
2008 .. 87
2009 .. 98

I've been wondering: how do you properly form the possessive of "A's"? Surely "A's mixed messages" isn't right, as they aren't the mixed messages of "A", but "A's'" just looks awkward. Seems like most people just say "fuck it" and make the same choice as the headline writer, and of course the idea gets across and communication is what's really important, but I'm curious.

How do you properly refer to holes in the A's organization?

Beanep(h)oles?

Wow, Barrett, I groove you a fastball over the heart of the plate and you swing and miss by two feet. Try, try again, if you must.

A's's holes of course.

Buck's 101 wRC+ -- I find these newfangled stats temporarily amusing -- in AAA last year didn't exactly scream "It's a travis-ty that this guy's still in the minors". As DCA said, if he proves he's an asset in the majors he'll play there. Crisp and Sweeney aren't exactly Lou Gehrig.

"Buck Baffled by Mixed Messages from the A's"

"Challenges to his manhood" means "throw him a high fastball and watch him swing through it like the second coming of Marvin Benard."

"Challenges to his work ethic" means "he still swings at high fastballs, dammit."

This is just my opinion, of course, but those messages don't look very "mixed" to me. As a matter of fact, they appear to be rather straightforward in what they're trying to say.
