Cuban defector Chapman fires agent

Are They Experienced?

Cuban pitching phenom Aroldis Chapman has fired the representative who helped him gain free agency, his former agency confirmed Saturday.

Edwin Mejia, of Athletes Premier International, had represented Chapman soon after he defected from the Cuban national team in July.

Mejia had started negotiations with several major league teams, but Chapman switched to veteran agents Randy and Alan Hendricks, Randy confirmed to ESPN The Magazine on Saturday.

The brothers represent such stars as Kendry Morales and Andy Pettitte.

It’s unclear when Chapman made the switch, first reported by the Florida Spanish newspaper El Nuevo Herald on Friday.

“Athletes Premier International is greatly surprised and deeply disappointed that Aroldis Chapman has decided to change agents,” the agency said in a statement. “The agency has put forth a lot of time and effort towards helping him achieve his goal of becoming a major league pitcher and he gave us no indication that he was unhappy with our advice or the way he was treated. We will have more to say about this matter at a later date, but in the meantime we wish Aroldis luck in his future endeavors.”

Aroldis is learning fast. I wonder how big the loan was?

Chapman probably realized that API wasn't going to give him the $60 million that they promised.

Who do the Hendricks have good relationships with?

I know they've done a lot of deals with the Yankees.

Can you "put forth ... time and effort?" What would that look like?

The more I read it, the more is sounds like it was written by Tyra Banks: "You are still in the running towards becoming America's Next Top Model."

Their current client list is fairly short. They were much bigger before they sold their business to SFX and started over in 2003. They've been around since the 1970s and have done deals with virtually everybody. Among their current clients are Kendry Morales (formerly with David Valdes), Andy Pettitte, Huston Street, Aaron Crow, Rick Porcello (formerly with Scott Boras), Jason Schmidt, and Braden Looper.

Does Roger Clemens count as a current client? Did they have anything to do with him hiring Rusty Hardin?

You're supposed to sign the big contract first, THEN become a distraction.

This scene played out in "Broadway Danny Rose". A comedian had one agent for years, then as soon as he hit it big, switched agents. Kind of tough for Mr. Mejia. I'd count my fingers after shaking hands with Aroldis from now on.

He didn't exactly have Mejia for years, though, did he? And who knows what they were promising him.

I believe it was Steve McMichael of the Bears who for years had his brother or brother inlaw do his contracts and then when the money started to get big his brother had the temerity to ask for a cut of it so Steve fired him.
