Cubs call up Javier Baez

“The Cubs are calling up top shortstop prospect Javier Baez, reports Bruce Levine of 670 The Score. He will join the team for their series opener against the Rockies on Tuesday.”

“In 104 Triple-A games this season, Baez is hitting .260/.323/.510 with 24 doubles and 23 homeruns. He hit .229/.285/.424 with 11 homers and a 33.7 percent strikeout rate in his first 66 games of the year, but has put up a .315/.384/.657 batting line with 12 homers and a 23.8 percent strikeout in 38 games since. Coincidentally, or perhaps not, the hot streak started when player-coach Manny Ramirez arrived.”

Thus begins the Cubs actually trying to win games era of the Epstein/Hoyer regime.

He's actually been hotter than Bryant the last month and half.

I'm a little surprised by this because it's only been what, a week ago? Two? since he started playing 2B.

I guess Alcantara moves to CF? Super-sub? He seems awfully athletic, but he's sort of hit that wall where he's got to start adjusting to pitchers that now have at least a little book on how to pitch him. I'm not sure it's the most opportune time to continue OTJ training in CF (11 games at Iowa this year was his first pro time in the OF). I guess with Bryant seeming more and more like he's gonna stick at 3B, Baez at 2B and Alcantara in CF is probably the 2015 lineup and potentially longer until we find out what to do with Russell and Almora.

Might as well have them learn their new position in Chicago. At least keep fannies in the seats....

Still, I'm expecting Baez to make less of splash than Castro, Rizzo, Alcantara, Lake, etc... He struggled initially at AA last year and got off to a bad start at Iowa this year - but he adjusts quickly.

I'm actually looking forward to watching the Cubs for the last 8 weeks or so.
