His defensive statistics are not horrible, but in the few games I've seen I was shocked at how slow Edmonds looked and the poor jumps he was getting. I don't think he can catch anything that is not a routine flyout, kinda like Steve Finley in 2005. I would not sign him for any amount of money. Stick a fork in him.

So how long does it take for the Cubs to realize they've made a mistake? Lou's not really the kind to sit by and let a player stink up the joint for longer than necessary. I can't see Edmonds being much better than awful. Regardless, he's going to need to hit about .500 for the Wrigley faithful not to turn on him. If you made up a list of players you'd never expect to see in a Cubs uniform, Edmonds would have a high place on the list.

It's clear no one here thinks this solves the Cubs' problem of their lack of another lefty bat. But that raises the question: is it really a problem for the Cubs? They're atop the bigs in runs scored, so I fail to see how their lack of another lefty is or will be detrimental to their offensive success.

This is a classic Cub move, though. Win or lose, the organization seems determined to do two things:

1) Stunt the development of young talent, namely its few position prospects
2) Acquire has-beens seemingly on the basis that they used to be good

I'm more bothered by the first part. It's tough to clearly remember when I wasn't hearing about how this Felix Pie kid was going to be the next great young Cub. At first, his age and need for development was the chronic reason for his tenure in the minors. I didn't object. It's easy to say he still isn't ready, but at what point do you let him work out the kinks at the big league level? He has to learn eventually and I see no better time than now, when he's part of a team that is piling up runs with or without his bat. Like someone said earlier, why not just let him do his thing offensively and give you gold-glove caliber defense?

I don't doubt they make the move. But I think it's reasonable to expect a very short leash to be put on Edmonds. Anyone with half a brain sees he's near the end of his career and his current stats aren't merely a case of a slow start. This is the type of move other, more rational organizations make when their starter, backup, and ballboy all go down. It's embarrassing that the Major League-leading run scorers feel this move is a necessity.

But this, along with their continuing to play Johnson as he tanked,
is a pretty clear indication the Cubs don't expect Pie to contribute
much this year. Which means they'll continue to see CF as a major
problem. Which means they'll have to trade for an established CF ...
which means there's a very good chance Pie is gone.

Fortunately I don't think Hendry is dumb enough to take on
Sarge Jr's or Pierre's contracts and nobody's rushing for Andruw
Jones. Coco Crisp is a possibility of course.

or ever, why are they so bent on jerking him around and wrecking his trade value, then

let the guy play, you should unload him while he's still a semi-hot prospect, not keep

Edmonds hit about the least impressive home run I've ever seen off Lilly last year--it, as much as any strikeout,
was what convinced me his bat speed was gone. Fastball down the middle, about 87 MPH, and Edmonds
just got around on it enough to pop it the opposite way, high into a stiff R-L crosswind, before it settled into
the first row close to the leftfield line.

I love this theory. If you never trade your prospects, they never pan out for any other team. Your team sucks too, but it's not as though anything could have been done about it, they just never had any talented players. The fault probably lies in scouting and development. That's so funny.

Living in SD, I have seen Edmonds play a few times this year. I simply cannot believe the Cubs are doing this with the idea of making him the platoon CF. I could certainly see a contender picking him up as a LH bat off the pine, maybe even to play two times a week, but if they actually demote Pie to let Edmonds platoon in CF, that is a mistake. Is that REALLY what they are going to do for sure, or is the lead-in just speculation?

There is neither the roster space nor the availability of other work for Edmonds on the Cub roster to suggest
they'll be doing anything else.

It's a bad move when the best that can be realistically hoped for is for (1) the player to get injured,
as he often does, or (2) for him to suck badly enough that the idea of using him in a significant
role passes quickly.

I hate to admit this, but I turned on last night's rerun on CSN and thought it was today's game. I've been really busy the last few days, and spent today chasing a 1 year old around the house. I turned on CSN in the background. I'd be even more embarrassed to admit how long it took me to figure it out. Zambrano should have tipped me off.

The Brewers wanted Suppan. The Pirates wanted Morris. The Reds wanted Jocketty. The Cubs want Edmonds. So that means La Russa's headed to Houston.
