Cubs give Kris Bryant a day off but maintain he’s in a ‘good place’

No, Kris Bryant is not hurt. His absence from the lineup Saturday afternoon has nothing to do with his left shoulder.

“This was part of the three-day in advance lineups and today was his day,” Joe Maddon said. “That’s it.”

OK, so…story over?

Not quite. Bryant isn’t hurt, but he is slumping and it’s understandable fans go straight to freaking out after the way 2018 went, when the former NL MVP battled the shoulder injury all season that kept him out of the lineup and made him look off at the plate even when he was on the field.

So, he’s at The Newberry, in other words?

The Cubs bullpen is the Bad Place

The Cubs and Maddon are about as reliable on Bryant injuries as Officer Barbrady saying “There is nothing to see here!!”

Maybe Bryant's healthy and he just kinda sucks now. IIRC, there was some talk last year or the year before about the Cubs wanting to change things about his swing and approach, so maybe either a) the changes messed him up, or b) he didn't change, and the Cubs were right, and now pitchers have basically figured him out.

From what I see (amateur armchair hitting coach alert!), pitchers have been extremely consistent pitching him up in the zone all year so far, and he simply can't handle it. Is that because of injury or an inability to adjust on his part? Maybe some of both?

Either way, there's something more going on than just a slump. It's obvious something isn't right. He's broken somehow.

Going by statcast, the main issue last year was a big drop in exit velocity; the problem so far this year is a big drop in average launch angle (but exit velocity back up around where it was). What I thought was going on last year was that he was sacrificing bat speed for contact too often -- but then the K-rate was back up around 25% so maybe that wasn't it. Still it seems to me there are too many times he's putting a lazy swing on the ball hitting these soft fliners that don't do much.

All that said, nowhere near enough PAs this year to say there's anything wrong.

It's Chili Davis's fault.

Bryant's always been a bit streaky... Even during his MVP 2016 -- he hit 221/296/375 in September.... after hitting 383/472/748 the month before.
