What a bunch of f***ing amoral cheapskates. Keep Zobrist, cut that @$$hole Russell, sign Machado or Harper. WTF? They have a license to print money between 2016, Wrigleyville, and the regional network they're about to announce. Who gives a $#!+ about the luxury tax?

My first thought reading that is it makes their decision to keep Addison Russell all the more mystifying and craven.

“We need to shed salary. We could get rid of a middle infielder.”
“Okay. Well I think we should cut the guy who sucks and also is a monstrous human being who beat the #### out of his wife.”
“Hm. That’s one way. Or we could get rid of the guy who had a very good season, who also happens to love his family so much he was prepared to miss a World Series game to see the birth of his son.”
“Ooh yeah, let’s cut his ass.”

Geez, only 2 posts in and already the credulity is 2 much.

Look, guys - teams "consider" things all the time. This is a normal part of the offseason rumor mill - we were even treated to an article earlier in the offseason that Bryant was on his way out. Notice that they haven't actually traded Zobrist. Do you guys honestly think they didn't "consider" trading Russell too?

Let's hold off on the search for fainting couches already.

#2 ... alas, as a baseball player, Russell does not "suck." As a hitter, he is of course not very good. But as a SS, he is a very good defender and his bat is not so out of place as folks would seem to believe (he's a bit below average).

The morality of the decision is obviously questionable but 12 WAR, 6 WAA and above-average last season are not so questionable. Like it or not, Addison Russell is a good baseball player.

More nitpicky: the Cubs could indeed have cut (non-tendered) Russell and owed him no money. However, as with any arb player, they can still cut him and save most of the money during the spring if they so choose. (I wonder how the money and the suspension work there.) On the other hand, nobody is considering "cutting" Zobrist -- which would do no good financially anyway.

Those two come together. The Cubs, rightly or wrongly, decided they were not going to just "give away" a player as talented as Russell to avoid the PR nightmare but presumably have also not found a team willing to trade anything of value for him. Presumably the Cubs are also not just going to give away Zobrist in order to save his salary but have also not found an acceptable offer for him.
