I'm on Team Ryno. I'd take Girardi or Quade too-I've been really impressed with Quade, actually-but I think Sandberg is the best choice. He's paid his dues in the minor leagues, and while you don't need a rocket scientist to be a baseball manager, you do need a very high baseball IQ, which Sandberg definitely had as a player. This is a guy who had a streak of 123 errorless games as a second baseman. Not making mistakes is a pretty big positive as a manager, and I see no reason why his focus and work ethic as manager would be less than it was when he was a player. His determination to be a HOF level player, as I see it, is a character trait, and that is a great character trait to have as a manager.
Today, he was named Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year, so I don't think you can stick an underqualified label on him anymore, and that's probably the most discussed negative about his chances at landing the job.
The Cubs obviously don't have a rich tradition of winning, but it might be time to bring in a guy that actually played for the team, and who understands the most important difference the Cubs have from every other team, which is playing so many day games. They haven't had a manager that played for the team since Don Zimmer.

SteveM: Wow...an ABQ reference. As a now long-time resident I can affirm that vouching for El Pinto is like endorsing Arby's (or Little Anita's in the ABQ parlance). Yes, it was good BITD (back in the Day), but you're far better off at Abuelita's, Monroe's or even Los Cuates than El Pinto these days.

And Sadie's is great on gargantuan portion sizes and wickedly strong Margies.

I am sad to hear that about El Pinto. I haven't lived at home in ten years since undertaking my academic wanderings. I will have to try out Abuelita's when home at Xmas.

Whoever takes over will have to be able to handle a young team because the Cubs are looking to have a bunch of young guys on this team next year.

Someone once stated that the minors was barren but that isn't really true. The Cubs still have Brett Jackson down on the farm and he is looking like he'll get a call up at some point in 2011 or 2012. The Cubs have several candidates that look like they could fit in nicely just like Theriot and Fontenot did in year or two. Guys like LeMahieu and Tony Thomas. The Cubs may not have an Albert Pujols down there but they certainly have enough talent down there to fill some positions very cheaply and have them produce.


On the pitching side they have a ton of live arms including Jay Jackson who will also probably be getting a look at in 2011 or 2012.
