Cubs TV: Search for Brenly’s replacement coming into focus

The search for Bob Brenly’s replacement is coming into focus. Their next television analyst might have more name recognition – and staying power – than any free agent the Cubs will sign this offseason.

With interviews scheduled to begin this week, sources have identified five contenders for the job: Dan Plesac; Rick Sutcliffe; Eric Karros; Todd Hollandsworth; and Gary Matthews.

I like the little of Karros that I’ve heard.  I’d very much dislike Sutcliffe.  I’m indifferent on the others.

If Kasper's opinion carries any weight, it can't be Sutcliffe. He surely knows what a dope that guy is. One of us! One of us!

Perhaps John Calvin was right about a vengeful God.

Hollandsworth's existence makes me angry for reasons that have nothing to do with Todd Hollandsworth as a person or broadcaster.

I thought the Doug Glanville idea somebody presented a couple of weeks ago was interesting but unlikely. It's too bad it didn't turn into anything.

Please no Sutcliffe. Cubs fans have been beaten down enough.

What if Len was ONE OF US?
Just a dork like ONE OF US

Impossible. Len's a video girl.

Plesac did the occasional Santo fill-in didn't he? I vaguely recall he was OK.

If it's Sutcliffe, I will not watch a Cubs broadcast for the entire time he is there and probably a good 10 years thereafter just to make sure he's not coming back. Sutcliffe is my most-loathed broadcaster and I've never even had to hear him that often. (Mark Grace is another bad one.)

Well, as a Phillies fan, I must say that I wouldn't miss Matthews too much. Or is it Gary Jr?

SUTCLIFFE?! I'm tempted to smash my TV now just to make sure I never see a Kasper/Sutcliffe booth.

If it's Sutcliffe I will have to buy a radio. (I assume Vince Lloyd has retired by now.)
   11. UCCF Posted: November 06, 2012 at 08:22 AM (#4294190)
Perhaps we should expand the search beyond guys who used to play for the Cubs. Or is that a requirement? What's Jerome Walton doing these days? Kevin Orie? Gary Scott?
   12. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: November 06, 2012 at 09:06 AM (#4294241)
Toothless, you gave a toothless report. :) Sarge is awful, AWFUL, AWFULLEST AWFUL IN CREATION.

He's got a voice for mime. He can't say in 50 words what could be said in 25. He never says anything that isn't a cliche. He does not prepare. Ever.

His only value is that once every few broadcasts he does point out some technical bit about hitting.

I can't believe someone made that joke. I can't believe that I was thinking the same thing. None of the candidates are inspiring, they need more, more, more.

Anyway, another voice against Sutcliffe - he is The Worst. Worse than Grace, worse than Hawk, worse than all the rest. He is the Bill Walton of MLB. Actually, he might be the Todd Christiansen of MLB. No team's fans deserve that.

I would think Sarge is the least likely. The Cubs should be looking for a long-term answer, and Matthews is 62. Is he going to want the full-season travel schedule for much longer? Karros, Plesac and Hollandsworth seem harmless enough. I'm not as anti-Sutcliffe as many of you are. I think once you get him out of the ESPN orbit, he'll tone his act down a bit. He's knowledgible and funny in a way that I think Len can bring out. ESPN's "THIS GAME IS THE BIGGEST EVENT EVER" attitude brings out the worst in Sutcliffe. I'd be willing to give him a chance with the day-to-day rhythms of a season.

I second the call to give Glanville a shot. I don't know if he's interested, and I've never heard him do a game, but his writing and his studio work show all the qualities of a really good analyst.

[14] Darn. :(

What a depressing and uninspired list. The only way it could be worse is if they threw Grace on there. I think Sutcliffe's been covered enough already. I recall Plesac filling in for Santo or Brenly in the past and finding him adequate, but he is absolutely abominable on MLB Network. It's like he's doing some kind of obnoxious sports analyst parody turned up to 10.

Hollandsworth ... eh. I hear him a few times a week on MLB radio; I don't find him particularly well informed or insightful and find he has, to a much lesser extent, a little bit of the Plesac parody thing going too. Given that he wears on me on an occasional basis, I fear how I would feel about him on a full season basis.

Sarge ... I haven't heard him a lot, but from what I have heard ... no.

I guess that leaves Karros as the best of the bunch. He seems fine in the national broadcasts and I think I'd be ok with him. But like UCCF said, let's expand the search a little bit. Hopefully Len will have a large amount of input here; I have enough faith in his judgement that if he's at all involved in the process, I'll be reasonably happy with the result.

Yeesh. If it must be a former Cub, I vote Hee-Seop Choi.
   18. UCCF Posted: November 06, 2012 at 12:43 PM (#4294561)
Or, in honor of Harry, Hector Villanueva. He loved that name.

I think a Choi-Villanueva-Kasper booth would probably be interesting.

Hee-Seop Choi is still playing, so he's out.

Again. And again. And again. :-)

OK, Dennis Miller was worse than Sutcliffe.

I wonder if MGL is available. :-)

Walt, as you are one of the most mild-mannered Primates, it's good to see you indulge some first class snark.

Take Gary Matthews Sr. Please. He contributes so little in the way of anecdotes or insights or knowledge about what players might be thinking, despite constant prompting, that I have to assume he was high on some memory-zapping drug for the entirety of the years 1969 through 1989. But that doesn't stop him from droning on at length, oh heavens no.
   23. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: November 07, 2012 at 03:03 PM (#4297134)
My strongest Harry Caray memory was as a kid when the Expos were visiting, hearing him try to pronounce "Andres Galarraga" after about the 6th inning. That and the time when he tried to say "Van Landingham" backwards, because why not?

As a Reds fan, I can't recommend tHom Brennaman highly enough for the gig. Oh, wait, he was there once already wasn't he?
