D-backs reach deal with Maricopa County to drop Chase Field suit

According to the memorandum, the Diamondbacks must play at Chase Field through the 2022 season. Then they could move to another facility in the county without penalty.

There is still a vote that needs to take place, so not “done done”.  But this poster believes they end up with new stadium at Salt River/Pima Indian Land, probably south of current Talking Stick Spring Training facility, near 101/202 Freeway interchange.

which would be a terrible option, I think.

Chase Field is on the light rail line, which makes it pretty accessible to a lot of people who would find it very hard to get to the Salt River/Pima property. As far as I am aware, no one has looked at extending the light rail line north along 101 to open up that area, and it is a very high-volume traffic area (especially around baseball game times during the week). I know I very likely wouldn't drive over there on a weeknight.

Field of Schemes weighs in:

Maricopa County to let D-Backs break lease early in exchange for dropping lawsuit, here comes the next stadium shakedown

The problem now, of course, is that Kendrick is certain to start shopping around for a new home — or, rather, shopping around for somebody else to pay him to build a new home, since he wasn’t even willing to pay to fix the “old” one that’s just 20 years old — and the Phoenix area is potentially a great place to do so, since it’s full of independent cities (and Native American reservations) that can be played off against each other. Sure, that’s going staggeringly poorly for the Arizona Coyotes, but then nobody really cares about the Coyotes — nobody visible to the naked eye, at least — whereas the Diamondbacks are fairly popular.

This is likely to be a long, ugly battle, and will be a significant test of whether stadium subsidy demands are really starting to fall on deaf ears, or just resting after a prolonged squawk. Check back here in about five years, and we should have the answer.

You seem to be laboring under the assumption that the team management cares about butts in seats. Evidence these days suggests that they are grasping at the last chances to get big money from media rights sales.

I'd bet they design a "ballpark" that has a playing field for the purposes of staging a baseball game, then high, safe walls around the field (why stop at mere netting??) to protect the E-sports players working their magic where the fans used to sit. They can clean up on two fronts!!

Their 20 year, 1.5 Billion TV deal with FSAZ just went into effect in 2016.

That field of schemes article seems a little skewed.

Most likely they ALREADY have a plan lined up, it involves the Salt River Indian Community, it does NOT include public funds, and the stadium that gets built is designed to cater to the higher end. Unfortunately as baseball is headed towards being a somewhat of a niche sport, the trend towards smaller stadium seating, with more luxury boxes, luxury seats, will continue.
