D-Backs pitcher Davis has thyroid cancer

Doug Davis has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and is to have surgery April 10, eight days after he makes his first start of the season for the Diamondbacks.

Davis plans to pitch through the cancer, his father, Mike, said at Chase Field on Friday.

“Doug has beaten a lot of things in his life. … This is probably the worst, but he has come back,” Mike Davis said.

“He has a great mindset. He wants to start. He wants to do his job. He is very set on this.”

Doctors discovered a lump in Davis’ throat last week, and a biopsy disclosed cancer on Monday.

“The prognosis is very good,” Mike Davis said. “They’ll probably take out the thyroid, and he should be back in about a month.”

Davis is starting tonight at Chase Field. I’ll look forward to giving him a nice long standing O

I don't have much to add that wouldn't be cliche. As a Cubs fan, I haven't been cheering him on most of the times I saw him pitch. Sports are absolutely secondary when it comes to things like this, however. I hope the best for him.

My mother had thyroid cancer and beat it. Davis is 20 years younger and (presumably) in better physical condition, although mom was no slouch on a day long hike. Don't expect him back in a month. Chemo is a #####. Prayers, hope, kind wishes, and better luck next year.

By Tuesday, John Henry asks John Lester for the money back for all that time spent on the DL.

Update from the AZ Republic

In his ongoing recovery from thyroid-cancer surgery, Doug Davis underwent treatment this week that required him to wear a wristband that said "radioactive material inside."

But the left-hander threw another bullpen session Friday and is taking aim at a return to the Diamondbacks during the May 16-18 home series vs. Detroit.

Davis began taking radioactive iodine pills Tuesday and was quarantined at home the past three days. He said he had to stay at least three feet away from people.

He was expecting the treatment to leave him devoid of energy, but he was pleasantly surprised by how he has felt.

"I expected the worse, and I was very fortunate not to get sick, not to feel any fatigue, nothing," he said. "I don't know why. I'm fortunate, I guess."

Davis originally hoped to be back with the team by next weekend but said that's no longer realistic. He is planning to make his first rehab start Monday in extended spring training or Tuesday for Triple-A Tucson.

Davis, who has thrown two bullpen sessions and has been playing catch regularly since the April 10 surgery, hopes he can be back after two rehab starts.

Hampton and Pavano chuckle softly.

Good luck, Doug.
