Dallas Morning News: Texas Rangers may find CF hard to bag (RR)

The Rangers have significant interest in Torii Hunter but are concerned about where the market might drive the length and financial terms of a deal for him. They would have interest in Andruw Jones on a short-term, shared-risk deal. Aaron Rowand and Mike Cameron appear to be fall-back options among the free agents.
...
The established group [available in trade] is headed by Boston’s Coco Crisp, but given the demand for him, the Red Sox may hold back on trading him until later in the winter. The Rangers have depth at catcher, which is one of Boston’s few needs. Kansas City’s David DeJesus and Tampa Bay’s Rocco Baldelli may also be available.
...
The fringe group includes Kansas City’s Joey Gathright and Cincinnati’s Ryan Freel. The Rangers had conversations in the past about a Gathright-for-[Joaquin] Arias deal.
...
And the prospect group includes Milwaukee’s Tony Gwynn Jr. and the New York Mets’ duo of Carlos Gomez and Lastings Milledge. The Mets need catching. Gwynn’s name has previously come up in conversations between the Rangers and Brewers.

Among the free agents the Rangers have contacted to express interest in further conversations is RHP Kerry Wood, an Irving native and Grand Prairie graduate.

Could the Rangers think Carlos Gomez is good enough for Laird?

Crisp for Salty?

What is this, a potato chip commercial?

Maybe Bobby V. shouldn't have run me out of town.

Could someone explain to me why Gerald Laird is considered anything more than a backup? It looks like he has a pretty strong arm but he's going to be 28 years old next year and has a 74 OPS+. I know it's a thin market but giving up Gomez for him would be stupid.

I don't think even Kevin would propose that trade...
you Red Sox fans really need your therapy!

We'll throw in Hansen then...

Laird has a 74 OPS+ (.674) now, but it was 82 (.716) after last season, and his AAA OPS was .833. 2007 was a distinct off-year for him, and you might gamble on him hitting quite a bit better next year.

No mention of Corey Patterson? He can flat out GET the ball, and although his game is VERY flawed, he can hit for some power and run the bases...and he's not as good as 2006, probably, but not as bad as 2007.

I wrote this three and half years ago and nothing has changed since then: "If it is, as Dan Werr astutely pointed out last year, that "being a third baseman in the Texas system right now is like being a guitarist in the Yardbirds" then being a Rangers' centerfielder has been like being the drummer for Spinal Tap. You have to go all the way back to the mid-1980s to find the last Rangers center fielder that started the majority of his teams games for three consecutive years (the aforementioned Oddibe McDowell). The Rangers have never had a star centerfielder. Heck, they've never had a single all-star centerfielder in the 40+ year history of the Senators II/Rangers franchise!"

I guess it depends on exactly what you mean. Both Sammy Sosa and Juan Gonzalez came up as CFers.

I think what I mean is pretty clear. No Ranger centerfielder has made the all-star team . . . ever.

Didn't Little Sarge break that last season? Or have his Rangers records been vacated because of the hGH?

You're right. Matthews made it last year. There hadn't been one as of when I wrote that Rangers preview about three years ago. My mistake.
