Damon Remains Open to Possible Return to Yanks

“Whenever it is, whether I start the season with them, or whether they trade for me at the deadline, or if they sign me next year, or what not — I love New York,” Damon told the radio station.

Speaking in the interview about Derek Jeter, whose 10-year, $189 million contract expires after this season, Damon said, “I hope he is not offered a 45 percent pay cut.” The Yankees have no plans to negotiate with Jeter until after this season.

Is this anything like tampering? I can't imagine this is going to make him that much more attractive to another team, pining about the days he was with the Yankees... dreaming of the day that his new team is going to fall out of contention and send him back to New York.

Koot, in baseball all roads lead to the Bronx.

I think the Reds should offer Damon a two-year deal and see what he and Boras say.

How is it anything like tampering? He's a free agent.

How is it anything like tampering even if he's not a free agent? Players under contract often demand trades, and if they have the leverage (either contractually or due to length of service), also often put restrictions on where they may be traded. Players pretty much can't tamper with themselves, more or less by definition. Option J excluded, of course.

I'm fully expecting the next one of these articles to be "Damon offers Yankees $12 million to sign him to a 2-year contract"

I wouldn't call it "tampering". I'd call it groveling and Damon is rapidly becoming pathetic in his public comments. Boras should put a muzzle on his client ASAP. How hard is it to try and say he's getting into the best shape of his life and looking forward to helping some team out this year?
