i have not yet read the article but I dont quite get the illustration. WHy is "topped the ball" in the middle of the arc? you think if you just barely made contact it would be at one extreme end. Also says "hit under" in the lower half but that would mean fly balls and some HRs isnt that the top half of the chart?

The color of the words corresponds to the color region in the chart. "Topped the ball" --> .189/0 HR. "Hit under" --> .072/287 HR.

Took me a 2nd glance at it to realize what was going on.

Yeah, the plot itself is really nice (each radial segment is a little bargraph), but a proper legend would have been better.

I also think rates would be better to report than the raw HR numbers

Agreed, this chart takes a while to understand. Perhaps that makes it not the best method for presenting the data?
