David Cone ‘self-taught’ his way into Yankees pitching-coach interview

As the Yankees search for Larry Rothschild’s replacement they haven’t limited the focus to college pitching coaches who have strong analytical backgrounds.

The Yankees contacted David Cone and interviewed him late last week at Yankee Stadium for the position.

“It was all good. I’m thankful for the opportunity to talk to them. It was nice they called me in and wanted to talk,’’ Cone told The Post on Tuesday.

The Yankees could probably do worse than David Cone, going by the knowledge of the subject that he displays on the broadcasts, but some time as minor league pitching coach would seem beneficial for both sides before contemplating a Major League job. The trend seems to be going the opposite way, but the stakes are too high for that, IMHO, at least for perennial contenders.

David pitched a long time, and seems to me part of the job of being a veteran pitcher is very similar to the job of pitching coach. There are probably some loners out there who can't be bothered with giving advice to the younger pitchers, but from my observation most of them are willing to help out when they can.

I'd love to see Cone as pitching coach, and eventually manager. He's really smart about pitching and baseball in general.

IDK, I would imagine his bullpen warmup routine is even more controversial now than it was in 1989.

Not Cone, but the job has been filled:
The Yankees will hire Matt Blake as their new pitching coach, ESPN.com’s Jeff Passan reports (Twitter link). Blake is being hired out of the Indians front office, as he was promoted to the role of Cleveland’s director of pitching development just two days ago, after working as a pitching coordinator and assistant director of pitching development for the previous three seasons. Blake also has past ties to the Yankees, as he worked for the Bronx Bombers as an area scout before heading to Cleveland.

At only 33 years old, Blake will provide the younger and more analytic-based approach that the Yankees were seeking to find as they looked to replace longtime pitching coach Larry Rothschild. Of the four known candidates for the job, three (with former Yankees star David Cone as the outlier) were younger names in their 30’s without much any direct coaching experience on an MLB staff. University of Michigan pitching coach Chris Fetter and Arkansas pitching coach Matt Hobbs were the two other names linked to the Yankees’ search.
