DAVID CONE TO RETURN TO YANKEES IN YES BOOTH (RR)

Dick Williams in the HOF and David Cone in the Yankee booth…this is gonna be some year for Smitty*!

David Cone has made peace with the Yankees and will return this year to broadcast about 50 games on YES, The Post has learned.

A key pitcher and leader on Joe Torre’s championship Yankees, Cone had annoyed George Steinbrenner by returning after a year away from baseball in 2002 for a brief and failed comeback with the MetsNew York Mets . After his retirement in 2003, Cone was given essentially an open invitation to join the Met broadcast booth, but opted against it for family reasons.

Now, though, with Joe Girardi having left the YES booth to become Yankee manager, Cone will take the place of his former catcher. Girardi and Cone had a strong relationship as teammates and Girardi caught Cone’s perfect game on July 18, 1999.

Besides joining a cast that includes Ken Singleton, Paul O’Neill, Bobby Murcer and John Flaherty in serving as an analyst for games, Cone is scheduled to serve as host for the weekly program Yankees on Deck. He is to replace David Justice, who recently took on a lesser role at YES.

Among Brosius, Girardi, Tino, JETER, Bernie, O'Neill, Clemens, Pettitte, Rivera, Wetteland and scores others as leaders, were there any followers on those teams?

I have never heard Wetteland referred to as a leader.

July 19th, 1999 was the date of Cone's perfect game.

It's amazing how quickly an athlete can lose it. One year later, Cone had an absolutely horrible season.

Shockingly quickly. Cone was great that whole year, he had a 1.28 ERA in 14 playoff innings. Then 2000 rolled around and...ugh.

this is cool. I can't wait to see some of the pairings they come up with - Cone/O'Neill would be fun, but Cone/Leiter ... now that would be something. It would be a race to see who calls Michael Kay an idiot first.

My first time at Yankee stadium was Cone's perfect game.

My dad and I were visiting the city to see some plays, and he'd grown up a Yankee fan in the 50's and saw Yogi Berra was coming back to the stadium for the first time in years. So we took the train up, scalped some great tickets and settled in.

In the third inning their was a rain delay, and all the obnoxious stockbrokers around us left.

My dad turned to me and said, "Cone hasn't given up a hit yet, we better stay in case it's a perfect game." Ha ha ha ha.

I don't like the Yankees and Yankee Stadium is an obnoxious place, but that's definetly the best time I've ever had at a ballpark.

Knoblauch! And now without those fifteen leaders in his life, he has become a fugitive and a pariah.

You can tell how immature the rest of the team was that they needed that many leaders (plus Tim Raines, Wade Boggs, Chili Davis, and Luis Sojo, among others) just to keep Ramiro Mendoza, Clay Bellinger, Joe Girardi, Hideki Irabu and Jeff Nelson from sabotaging the whole dynasty. Not to mention Jim Leyritz.

Er, I apologize for listing Girardi as one of the non-leaders. Replace his name with Todd Erdos or Chad Curtis or something.

Did she really say "Big-size Roger Clemens"? That's hilarious. I anticipate her using this phrase at least once this upcoming season.

Awesomely funny Waldman impression by Rich. Glad for the Yankees and MLB broadcasts that Cone will be a colorman. I always thought he would be a natural, because he was candid and funny as a player. Now if YES could just get rid of Michael Kay.....
