David Murphy of “High Cheese” weighs in on the budding Ryan Howard controversy:
Yesterday brought little clarity on the futures of Chase Utley and Ryan Howard, only an oddly timed statement by general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. about an Inquirer story that relayed varying medical opinions on cortisone shots like the one Howard received a few weeks before rupturing his Achilles’ tendon in Game 5 of the NLDS. Amaro summoned reporters during the early stages of Sunday’s game, laying out the organization’s argument that the cortisone shot and eventual injury were unrelated, an argument that would have made more sense to make prior to the publication of the article, which said the Phillies declined to do that.
The organization’s handling of the situation has little impact on the issue that the general public cares most about — when Howard will return to the lineup — but it does feed the perception, fair or not, that the Phillies themselves do not have a clear idea.
Ed Wade’s Achilles heel was middle relievers; is Amaro’s actually an Achilles heel?

1. Pasta-diving Jeter (jmac66) Posted: May 21, 2012 at 12:36 PM (#4136850)The lack of ANY position-player prospects at ALL able to do ANYTHING is absoludicrous. There are 23 non-pitchers on the 40-man roster, 8 of whom are under age 31. Hunter Pence (29), Michael Martinez (29), John Mayberry Jr. (massive disappointment), Domonic Brown (what happened to him? Is he dead?), Freddy Galvis (OK I guess), Tyson Gillies, Sebastian Valle, and Cesar Hernandez.
What do they do?
If it's me I keep my eyes peeled for a bat but don't go overboard. The offense is not great, but it should be a bit better and when you have this sort of pitching that cures a lot of ills and Utley and Howard should be improvements, even if they are not 100%.
Other than that...blockbuster for one of the pitchers? Not sure how the teams would match up in terms of talent to give back but a lot of AL Contenders (AL East non-Tampa, Detroit) would probably view Hamels as a difference maker. Not sure it's for the best for Philadelphia but that's an option.
Given the disparity between the leagues, I think Youk would be a beast in the National League and being able to play 1st and 3rd would be hugely valuable to the Phillies.
If they go into full-scale selling mode, Hunter Pence could be a good piece to move. That would open up RF for Domonic Brown, who needs to be given another shot there before the Phils give up on him. Pence will net about $13-14M in his last year of arbitration and perhaps it's best to let someone else pick up that tab. Alternatively, they could move Victorino and try to sign a CF next offseason when Victorino, Michael Bourn, Josh Hamilton, B.J. Upton, Melky Cabrera, Angel Pagan, etc., all hit the market.
Look at the Nationals with their pitching staff and bullpen, yet they have been fairly ineffective (until recent games) at run support, squandering a number of good starting pitching performances in the process. I'm willing to take a wait-and-see attitude with both teams at this point.
To the point of the article, I'm not sure that the Phillies training and medical staff are worthy of scrutiny in this matter. Certainly, Red Sox fans probably have more questions about that team's staff given recent history.
I think he's in the process of busting. He's on my fantasy team, so I hope it isn't the case, but he's off to a very rough start and cannot seem to get healthy. Granted, he hit decently enough at the big league level last year that I think he merits a spot in the show, but that doesn't seem to be in the cards because the org is very down on his defense.
Brown's a very good change of scenery candidate, and I hope he gets one because otherwise, he could be headed down the wrong track.
The decision to give Howard the injection and play him despite the risks wasn't horrible in isolation. They were trying to make a World Series run, and he hit like gangbusters for a week after the shot before falling apart in the playoffs. The problem was that Howard's $125M extension had yet to begin, making the cortisone shot a nine-figure gamble that went bust.
The Indians and Blue Jays both wanted Brown during the Lee and Halladay trade negotiations. Maybe an old-fashioned prospect challenge trade - Brown to Cleveland for Lonnie Chisenhall, or to Toronto for Travis Snider?
FYI, Napoli has been old Napoli this season -- 109 OPS+.
A 109 OPS+ is still better than most of Napoli's peers, right?
Youk plus cash for Blanton...
Even with the health issues, I don't think Youkilis has negative trade value.
Boston's going to have to eat a chunk of Youkilis' salary to move him. Very few teams can take on the $9M or so he's still owed this year, and the Phils definitely can't without going way over the luxury-tax limit, even if Blanton's salary goes back to Boston. He'll have to go somewhere in exchange for a big contract, which means Boston needs to be getting something that will help their team - that's probably going to be a pitcher based on the state of their pitching staff.
I don't think anyone knows what Youkilis will fetch in trade. If he can't get into Boston's lineup regularly because of Middlebrooks, they'll have a hard time convincing anyone that he's healthy and ready to contribute. Because of that, I'm not convinced there's a substantial market for him, but I could be way off. We'll see.
I don't know that the Red Sox have a single player who they could trade Hamels for.
Of course the Red Sox are traditionally quite persuasive when it comes to the prospective free agents they trade for. And maybe what they want this season is a rental, given their (temporary?) starting rotation woes and (temporary?) budget woes.
Ehhh, my work computer was fighting me. I wasnt saying anything too important anyway.
He's been afflicted with whatever hit Michael Taylor.
I think sometimes you have to look a trajectory:
Who would you rather have?
Player 1:
Hits .325/.390/.575 in A ball
.300/.375/.525 in AA
.290/.360/.500 in AAA
versus player 2:
.260/.330/.420 in A ball
.275/.350/.450 in AA
.290/.370/.480 in AAA
Player 1 has a much better career record and is still slightly ahead in AAA, but player 1 seems to slip a bit with each promotion, and player 2 seems to improve relative to league with each promotion.
Roughly speaking Player 1 would be Brandon Wood or Corey Patterson, player 2 would be Chase Utley or Will Middlebrooks or Dan Uggla
Oh for sure. At least as long as he's mostly at C (as the Rangers are using him this year). But he's not (so far) repeating anything close to last year's 173 OPS+. Given Ruiz is currently carrying a 170 OPS+, I'm assuming that was the Napoli Crispix was referring to. Seeing as Ruiz averaged a 113 OPS+ from 2009-11, he was already the old Napoli (give or take). Anyway, I've just noticed a few people around here talking about Napoli as if he was still putting up the insane numbers from last year -- which of course he might start doing from here on out -- but so far he's just been very good ... like the old Carlos Ruiz. :-)
Probably should be posting in the Ricketts thread then. Although I haven't checked what caused the Pujols thread to reach 700+ posts. Condiments again?
