David Ortiz believes Manny Ramirez will make good mentor - The Boston Globe

Who is Manny being now?

“It’s a different guy. He’s been doing different things for the past couple of years,” Ortiz said after an 8-6 victory against the Braves. “I’ve been talking to him a lot on the phone and sometimes I get confused because I don’t know if I’m talking to him or not. This is legit.”

As usual these days, WEEI.com has more detail than the Globe does.

From the link in #2:
“I’??ll tell you what, the smarter that Manny is, and as much as he knows about the game, I would put Manny right in the big leagues a couple of weeks later. Player-coach, whatever you want to have it. That organization needs a guy like that right now more than ever and it’??s because the experience that he has, the personality that he’??s carrying with himself right now. I think the smart player on the ball club would like to be right next to him 24/7 just so they can get to learn what he knows about the game.”

Not really clear if Ortiz is echoing Ramirez's own sentiments about playing in MLB again, or just speculating. Ortiz appears very impressed by the new Manny, stopping just short of predicting a Nobel Prize for Ramirez.

Maybe Ortiz and Manny did a lot of bonding and talking about their futures on a recent road trip.

That would certainly explain these sentiments.

I hadn't seen this before, and just quickly skimmed it - but I do love that the premise for the article could have been rehashed multiple different seasons.

Well, that and the Galaxie 500 reference (mostly this).
