David Ortiz on his contract

Year-to-year should be OK with the Red Sox and Ortiz. I can understand why he wants another year. That doesn’t mean they should give in. Let him play out this contract and go from there.

Facts:
1. He has a contract for 2014. Assuming he continues to hit like David Ortiz, the Red Sox clearly make the qualifying offer for him after the season. Because that figure this offseason is about $14.1, it will a little higher than that next offseason - probably north of $14.5 million.

2. If he accepts it, we do this again next year at this time. If he rejects it, any team that would sign him would have to give up a high draft pick, plus presumably pay Ortiz for at least two years for something like $13-$16 million/year. This is obviously not happening.

How do we know this? In part, because this is what has happened before, when he was younger. I don't blame him for trying to get the additional year, but he has made far more money with the Red Sox (through 2014, north of $125 million so far). If he hits this year, they'll give $15m next year. If he collapses this year, they'll still bring him back, at a reduced amount. He does not have a ton of leverage in this matter.
