David Ortiz Wounded in Shooting

Ortiz, 44, was “shot in the back at an incident that took place at Dial Discotheque in Santo Domingo,” Felix Durán Mejia, spokesperson for the Dominican National Police, told CNN Espanol.

Latest I’ve seen is the Chief of Police has reported he is in surgery but in stable condition.

Boston Globe’s Alex Speier tweets that Ortiz’ brother says David is out of surgery and doing “fine.”

On ESPN they had security cam footage of the guy coming up behind Ortiz and shooting him in the back. Ortiz was seated with his back to the gunman along a railing that was higher than the walkway.

They said he arrived on a scooter or motorcycle, walked into the club and shot him. That seems odd, like a hit.

Except for there being only one shot, despite what appeared to be time for more. Very strange, but didn’t look like a robbery attempt. They caught the guy, so perhaps the motive will eventually come out. Hard to say anyone getting shot is lucky, but this could have been much worse, assuming current reports of a full recovery are correct.

From a different angle though, you could see that Ortiz flipped his bat immediately before the first shot was fired.

It does look like a hit. He’s a lucky man - he should be thankful the guy didn’t blast away like Mark David Chapman.

I'm not sure how well this squares with everything I've learned about hitmen and shootings from television shows.

More seriously, I would say it sounds like a dude looking for attention, or someone who was hired for a hit and was not good at it.

One year when I was a summer camp counselor (in Maine, in the forest) I had this cute little 8-year old boy from Santo Domingo that spoke almost no English. He was terrified and basically silent and teary for the first week or two. Slowly he got more confident and the first thing I remember him saying with a smile was: "where is the discotheque?"

According to Leo López, who works as David Ortiz’s assistant and press representative, his last surgery ended at 3:30am and he’ll remain in intensive care for the next 24 hours. López said doctors had to remove Ortiz’s gallbladder and control bleeding from his liver and bowel.

You do NOT shoot at David Ortiz in the Dominican.

I'm really surprised the guy managed to hit him, given Papi's skill at avoiding attempted drillings.

They had a few different videos floating around Twitter last night of some street justice being dealt out to the alleged perp and perhaps accomplices. The cops getting there probably saved their lives for now, but I'm not exactly sure they'll be any safer inside a Dominican prison.

Someone on Twitter had a picture of the shooter after the bartender/crowd got to him (which happened before the cops showed up). They beat the ever-lovin' PISS outta the guy...

I'm not sure exactly what I expected, but that seemed a lot more methodical than my mental image of mob violence. They were really sizing up and measuring those kicks/stomps.

Not to mention the glass bottles they were busting over the guy's head.

True, and good for a laugh. But this was more like being hit by the catcher's throw back to the mound.

If the story did not already have this tagged as a robbery attempt with how this was done totally in the open I would have had this as a guy going after another guy who had ###### his wife or girlfriend. Like he was outraged he could not stand waiting until the guy came out of the club and had to get him right NOW.

19. Daily mail now saying it is exactly that

Police in the Dominican Republic believe former Boston Red Sox star David 'Big Papi' Ortiz was shot by two cops hired by a Dominican Republic drug lord who believed the baseball player was having an affair with his wife, DailyMail.com has learned.

If he was having an affair with a drug lord's wife, he needs to change his nickname to "Big Idiot".

I think it's more likely that (taking the theory as accurate) the drug lord's a paranoid loon.

Well, can you really become a drug lord without being a paranoid loon? Seems like it goes with the territory. That's why you stay far away from their wives.

In Big Papi's defense, though, the drug lord did ask him to take her out and show her a good time. Took her to an old diner and they won a dance contest together. Then Papi saved her life after she OD'd on heroin. Plunged the needle into her heart himself after driving her to his dealer's house. It was ####### trippy.

The wife did say that she'd be in as much trouble as Papi if her husband found out, but Papi didn't believe her. Guess he was right.

It's important to note the Daily Mail has a proud history of being consistently wrong, and frequently just making #### up. Using them as a source is about the same as using the World Weekly News as a source.

With a driver and a gunman, it definitely seems like an obvious hit. I don't think we can really tell yet whether this is just some ######## who got into a beef earlier in the night with Ortiz (over a woman or just any type of beef) or whether the Daily Mail actually got something correct about a paranoid druglord.

If it IS the druglord, though, he's probably pretty ######. People love their Big Papi as much in the DR as they do in Boston and I can't imagine it's any safer to cover for the guy behind the hit than it is to squeal on him.

Papi is in the US now, at Boston General. No more gallbladder, which sucks, but otherwise he seems like he should be OK so long as he doesn't develop sepsis.

You can do OK without a gallbladder. My mom had hers taken out probably ten years ago, and she's still going strong.

Story keeps getting weirder:

David Ortiz was flown from Santo Domingo to Boston Monday, where he received further medical attention following emergency surgery in the Dominican Republic after he was shot there Sunday night. The good news is, Ortiz is reportedly up and moving around and speaking with family, and is mostly out of danger. Meanwhile, back in Santo Domingo, the investigation into the shooting continues, and the details from that investigation are getting a little strange.

Three things were widely reported in the immediate aftermath of the incident Sunday night that turned out to be incorrect: that Ortiz was shot in the leg; that Ortiz was shot during a robbery attempt; and that the shooter was a man named Feliz Garcia, who was arrested Sunday night sometime after he was recorded on video being severely beaten by Ortiz fans. Turns out Ortiz was shot in the back by a man police have since identified as Rolfy Ferreyra, and police now depict the shooting as a botched assassination attempt coordinated by somewhere between six and ten co-conspirators. Surveillance video of the attack shows a man walking up behind a seated Ortiz, shooting him once in the back, and then freezing in place for a moment, before taking off on foot

...

Police in the Dominican Republic say they’ve arrested Ferreyra, Garcia, and four other suspects, whose efforts were allegedly coordinated by an individual who was paid about the equivalent of $7,800 to mastermind the job, and who is among those in police custody. Cops say Garcia was driving the getaway motorcycle, which he apparently crashed or abandoned near enough to the scene for witnesses to circle him and brutally stomp him in the street. The hunt is reportedly still on for a group of people Ferreyra and Garcia were apparently seen on surveillance footage talking to immediately before the shooting. Per ESPN:

The four suspects still at large were identified as Luis Alfredo Rivas Clase, aka The Surgeon, as well as a woman known as The Venezuelan, or Red, and two other men, prosecutors said in a statement.
