David Price blasts MLB for failing to market Red Sox star Mookie Betts

David Price wants to see more of MVP teammate Mookie Betts on TV, beyond the on-field show Betts puts forth daily.

Price told reporters Friday that MLB is wasting an opportunity to attract younger fans, specifically fans of color, by not making an effort to promote one of the sport’s best players.

Mind you, MLB in the current day seems remarkably incompetent at marketing any of its players, so….

I just don’t get these criticisms. I don’t understand what MLB should be doing that they aren’t.

Price seems to have appointed himself Chairman of the Sticking Up For Teamates Committee. As in the Eckersley flap, he seems to be going after folks who really haven’t done anything to deserve it. Maybe he has issues of his own. Or perhaps he thinks the Red Sox should trade Betts to the Yankees so he can get more publicity? He might have a point after all.

I thought it was weird that MLB's big ad campaign around the postseason last year, "Let the Kids Play", featured a 48-year-old Ken Griffey Jr. rather than one of the game's current young stars. Maybe they didn't want to play favorites among the teams in the postseason by featuring a single player, but they could have done a similar commercial with some combination of Betts/Bregman/Yelich/Machado/Judge/Acuna/Ramirez etc. featured more prominently.

They have a new ad featuring a bunch of those guys this season.

#4 good, I'm glad to hear that. I thought I had seen more commercials with Griffey before the season but I've been traveling for work most of the past couple weeks so haven't watched much t.v.

Hell, Junior's own kid doesn't play baseball!

I still reckon an MLB boy band would do wonders for marketing, but it's time to rethink the lineup. Buster Posey is probably past his sell-by-date as the cute one (Benintendi?); McCutchen cut his hair so can't be the older one with the funny hair (Harper? Blackmon?); Machado for the bad boy; I guess Mookie could be the short one? Trout is getting up there but still kinda perfect as the boring one who can actually sing.

Don't boy bands always have to have the one who's significantly younger than the others whose voice is still changing? Juan Soto probably?
