Dayton Moore says Royals are focused on 2017 | MLB.com

He is just trying to increase the ask, right? Right?

And right now, any talk of fire sales or giving up on the postseason chase is simply false, Moore said.

“Our process when we left Spring Training was to compete for a division title and the World Series,” Moore said. “That thought process isn’t going to change after 10 games or 20 games or 37 games or whenever. It’s not going to change.

“We’re going to continue to expect our team to play better. We’re going to focus on winning our division. We had a plan in the very beginning and we’re not going to abandon that plan. We’re playing very good baseball right now.”

The Royals, entering Tuesday night, had won six of seven.

“It is what it is,” Moore said of the rumors. “They’re just not accurate. I believe in this team.”

His focus might be better if he throws away those rose-colored glasses.

Wow, there's some news! GM refuses to say team has given up on current season. Talk about man bites dog!

If he hasn't given up on 2017 yet, he really should.

There is no reason why this team can't win 79 of their next 124 games.

On its face, this is a ridiculous quote. Even if the thought to be WS bound shouldn't change after 37 games into a season, certainly that thought would after...what-47 games? 57 games? This quote suggests you are a buyer at the trade deadline for assets that will depreciate/disappear at the end of the current season, no matter how many games out you are at that point.

I thought that Dayton Moore was much smarter than that. Clearly not.

All he's saying is he's not ready to throw in the towel mid-May.

4 1/2 games out of first place.

Both KC's first and second order winning percentages are below .400. They are toast.

The past does not always predicate the future. Still, my point stands that the GM isn't going to give up on a team whose key players won the Series two years ago.

See also, SF.

Different sport, but Mark Cuban just admitted that as soon as the Mavs were eliminated from the playoffs they tried to lose as many of their last games as possible to get a better chance in the draft lottery. He did say it was nothing the players on the court did, but the team utilized younger, shittier players so they would lose.
