Deadline to set 40-man rosters tonight (11-20)

The Rule 5 Draft will take place on the final day of next month’s Winter Meetings (Dec. 13) and allow clubs with open space on the 40-man roster to select certain players not on the 40-man roster out of other organizations.

Let’s discuss all of our favorite potential 8th relievers and 5th outfielders! (Or Orioles opening day starters.)

Red Sox have left highly-touted AAA first baseman Josh Ockimey off their 40-man, so he’s available in the Rule 5 draft.

A shitty team with no first basemen who can hit worth a damn—*clears throat* ROYALS!—should take a long look at him.

So were the Mets able to reach a settlement with the insurance company and get Wright off the 40-man? I haven’t seen any reporting about it since the articles a week ago.

Edinson Volquez, a 10-year major league veteran, was one of the guys added yesterday. I haven't spent a bunch of time looking over the lists, but I'm a Riley Ferrell fan. A bunch of formerly famous first rounders left unprotected too - Tyler Kolek obviously, but also there's Max Pentecost and Richie Martin and I'd be very surprised if no one took Tyler Jay.

I'm going to look through names later today, but Richie Martin strikes me as a possible middle infield pick.
(Also seems to me that Tyler Jay isn't any good.)

Rays DFA CJ Cron. Marlins DFA Derek Dietrich. Seem like useful players but they make more than the league minimum, so no place for them in Florida.

Dietrich should be someone the Yankees look at. Lefty with some pop. Can play 2B until Gregorius returns, and then slide into a super sub, or play 1B.

DFA doesn't mean cut. They could be traded for value.

But yes, these strike me as pennywise decisions.

One guy who intrigues me statistically - Brewers LHRP Quintin Torres-Costa. He's out for the season (TJS), but teams have been picking injured relievers recently. Was 23 last season in AA and AAA. Good strikeout numbers, walk numbers too high. Great ERAs (1.50 in Colorado Springs).

BA already has a few names for the Rule 5.

Richie Martin of the A's seems interesting.

Keon Wong

For teams who like to shift, Wong struggled to make those throws from short right field when he was shifted at second.

That seems insane to me. I realize the throw in the shift is a bit longer but it's not THAT long. How bad is this dude's arm? Also they mention he played some third base this year, like if he can't make a throw from second base shifted how can he make any kind of throw from third?

The distance may be similar, but you're going to have much less time to make the throw from short right than you do from third (the ball gets to the third baseman faster and the runner hitting it into short right has the edge of starting from the lefthanded batter's box).
