Deadspin: Omar Minaya Flies Coach, Gets Heckled

I’ve heard of Omar Infante…but Omar in coach?

The beleaguered Mets GM probably figured 36,000 feet high would be a safe place to escape his critics and watch 27 Dresses on a 10-inch screen. He was wrong.

Reader Jason sends in this photo, along with the backstory:

So I’m settling into my seat on a VERY inexpensive Jetblue flight to Chicago to see the Mets in Wrigley when I notice the flight attendant having a hard time closing the overhead compartment because of someone’s bag. After she sheepishly looks around for the culprit—he identifies himself. Since everyone was already seated and ready to fly, the apparently inconsiderate passenger was on stage for all to see. It was none other than Omar Minaya himself. What I didn’t say before is that this flight is CRAWLING with Mets fans making the pligramage to Wrigely. At once the plane is abuzz. One young man in 18A shouts out “I woulda traded frenchy three months ago” another says “Better live it up, this is probably your last flight to chicago as GM”. Delighted by the impromptu celebrity roast I chimed in with “I bet they flew Mike Jacobs in business class, at least”. We all laughed in unison—he sat down and put his headphones on, a defeated man.

We wonder if he was able to find a power bat in the SkyMall catalog.

Deadspin's a virus that replicates and enables doucchebags.

Way to reward a guy for not draining the expense account.

While it may be ###########, I'm not surprised to hear that it happened.

It would have required great willpower to not heckle JP Ricciardi in the same way, if I had been in a similar situation.

This is Omar Minaya we're talking about. I'm sure he agreed to pay $66m over 4 years for that ticket.

I'm sure Cashman flies Spirit or something.

I would love to see how these guys would handle a room full of people heckling them. A bunch of sheep. About the only brave ######### was the first guy and the guy writing thise post was a freakin cowardly #########.

I would love to paid as much as Omar Minaya to do my job as poorly. I think hecklers are usually pretty dumb, mind you, and none of these comments were particularly clever.

Also, am I the only one that read this as "fires coach" at first? Speaking of, I had better not see Jerry Manuel's face at the helm on Opening Day 2011. Or I'll... wave my fist impotently at the sky.

Omar has spent his tenure as GM craving the back-page headlines so forgive my lack of sympathy for his flight plight.

I thought this was an Onion article at first.

I met Brian Cashman on the off-day in between game 2 and 3 of the 2004 ALCS. I was too sullen to heckle or antagonize.

Man, humans are weird.

I am so glad I'm a cyborg.

I hear he's conveyed to/from the airship in an F9C Sparrowhawk.

Actually, by putting on his headphones, he was victorious.

I love how this is inconsiderate but having stuff stolen out of your bag is just unfortunate and not the fault of the people who had your bag the whole time.

Russlan Christmas in September:

The conservatism with Johan Santana’s pectoral strain will result in right-hander Dillon Gee making his major league debut with the starting assignment Tuesday against the Washington Nationals.

Omar should just stand up, say "you're all right, I screwed up and you great fans deserve better, I promise to do my best to fix this mess as long as I am lucky enough to have this job." Heckling is something he should just accept gracefully as a minor negative in one of the worlds best jobs.

Or he could just treat everyone with thoughtful, caustic quips.

(Hate that site, but in this case the first definition is right.)

I enjoyed this comment from the linked page:

"Later, he traded two prospects for peanuts"
   20. Russlan will never be fond of Jason Bay Posted: September 06, 2010 at 02:57 AM (#3634150)
Gee's an interesting case. He has a very good strikeout rate and k/bb ratios but has been giving up a ton of hits and homers. His ERA is about 5.00 despite striking out more than a hitter an innnings and posting a k/bb ratio north of 4. I am really wondering how one manages to do that. If his stuff is mediocre, how come he misses bats? If his stuff is OK, how come he's getting knocked around?

Either way, it's better than watching Pat Misch start.

I'd have hoped for something more along the lines of: "Good luck with those MBAs in this economy, frat-boy dumbasses."

I would have thought yours was a joke, but I know better.
