Deadspin: What Do We Think Of This Old Video Of An Umpire Handling An Extremely Pissed Terry Collins?

We need more of these umpire sound clips and less of A-Rod repeatedly exclaiming, “The Toddfather.”

The context is important. Utley’s notorious takeout slide in Game 2 of the 2015 National League Division Series nuked the right fibula of Mets infielder Ruben Tejada. Utley was suspended for the next two games of the series, and ultimately MLB instituted what has come to be called the Chase Utley Rule, essentially banning (but not eliminating) takeout slides. Syndergaard’s pitch in 2016 was assumed to be an effort at retaliation, even all that time later. Possibly it was just a wild fastball? Either way, as you can imagine, Terry Collins was quite pissed.

Maybe you have seen this next video before. I have not, and I find it absolutely fascinating. It shows the same sequence, but this time with clear audio of crew chief Tom Hallion interacting first with Syndergaard, and then a fuming Terry Collins: ...

So what do we think, other than that this is a very cool look at what’s being said in those blustery manager-umpire showdowns? I’ll admit, I always imagined the umpires saying #### like DON’T YOU ###### RAISE YOUR ###### VOICE AT ME I’M ###### IN CHARGE HERE TERRY! This is very much not that. What say you?

I thought the umpire was excellent. He was firm but not belligerent and let Collins do his screaming and swearing and get everything out.

I thought he was good right up until he started getting physical and verbally loud and profane with Terry. That's not defusing the situation and if anything just frustrating the people involved and possibly leading to more shenanigans.

It also signals to Collins that his time is up and he's had his say, not leave.

I like this Wally Backman ejection. My favorite part is "Catcher, get out of the way."

The biggest takeaway is the ump implying that they're under pressure from the league to do something here, so you can't really blame the home plate ump for a quick hook.

I tend to agree. Instead of trying to talk over the complainants, let them get it out of their systems (which takes less time than interrupting them, because they'll just keep on going longer). Then you explain the facts of life to them and walk away, that's it. In fact, toward the end Halion asks something like, "Is that it?" to Terry so he was considering it at some level. So, good job, but could have been even better.

I still say Earl Weaver gets the Academy Award for umpire arguments.

Yeah, Hallion tells the players and Collins the league has his ass in a sling. Pretty clearly blaming the league for the quick hook. In retrospect is does really suck for the Mets. Their player gets hurt, then their pitcher gets ejected for not hitting Utley. It's not like the ball was even close to him, not sure why a warning to both teams wouldn't have worked. Then it's on whoever hits the next batter.

Looked to me like he was being physical and loud with Terry to keep him away from the other umpires - especially the home plate umpire. Seemed like Hallion was bumping Terry away for his own good. Anf the raised voice seemed again like it was Terry's own good - sort of a 'snap out of it' thing. I give Hallion huge props for the way he handled it. Apologetic with the players, gave them the league to blame, and did what he needed so Collins wouldn't be suspended by any further confrontation with the HP ump.

Yelling at another human being rarely defuses the situation. Making physical contact with an alpha male, one who is not allowed by the rules to touch you, also rarely leads to good things.

Come on guys, give him a break. They have his ass in a jackpot. In. a. jackpot.
   11. Darren Posted: June 15, 2018 at 02:29 PM (#5692911)
Collins comes off as a completely irrational child. He knows the rules and he knows they are supposed to immediately eject if they think it's intentional. He falsely claims MLB did nothing to Utley.

Imagine the disappointment when you finally win the lottery, only to find you're paid with $200 million worth of umpire ass.

Everything about it is ####### awesome. I love it. There is no passive aggressive BS here. It's just raw, honest emotion. And "our ass is in the jackpot" is a phrase that has now entered my Summer '18 lexicon.

But ... it worked, didn't it? Hallion's actions obviously did not lead to further escalation. Collins did his bit, and then he left.

I don't see Hallion's contact or body language with Collins as confrontational at all. He treated Collins like a guy would treat a drunk buddy who was picking a bar fight. "Hey buddy, come on, let's get you outta here before you make things worse for yourself." To me, he came across as basically having Collins's back.
   15. McCoy Posted: June 15, 2018 at 07:37 PM (#5693095)
Anything would have worked. Collins wasn't a drunk idiot. But getting physically, yelling, and swearing at someone doesn't really accomplish much. Like I said he did a much better job with the players who were also amped up and agitated as well. He didn't get physical with them, raise his voice or swear at them.

what did the league do to Utley?
   19. Batman Posted: June 15, 2018 at 10:04 PM (#5693194)
The league ordered Utley to get old.
   20. Howie Menckel Posted: June 15, 2018 at 10:24 PM (#5693215)
a good line - but suspending a guy for 2 games and then rescinding the whole thing doesn't seem like much of a punishment. but I am being told here that Collins "falsely claims MLB did nothing to Utley." maybe I missed what they did
   21. Pasta-diving Jeter (jmac66) Posted: June 15, 2018 at 10:32 PM (#5693217)
1.) it was the 5th game between the teams in 2016--why did the Mets wait so long?

2.) Utley hit 2 dingers in the game after the incident

If I'm listening right Thor says, completely dead pan, "I was trying to throw a ######' fastball". That's is so ####### perfect.

Collins comes off as a completely irrational child. He knows the rules and he knows they are supposed to immediately eject if they think it's intentional. He falsely claims MLB did nothing to Utley.

I think you grandly underestimate the emotional edge most people in pro sports (and other high stakes professions) live on. It's a performance if nothing else. He's gotta make his team believe he's ready to fight for (quite literally) right there. But it's all sanctioned and we all know how it ends, not in a any fisticuffs, but maybe a little chest bumping or spittle flying before the dramatic heave ho and gum throwing walk to the tunnel.

________

On a separate note, I believe hawk absolutely flipped his #### in the last half decade on a no-warning heave ho that a Sox pitcher got (here it is, lol: "here's an umpire in the American League that knows nothing about the game of baseball"), but given this latest video it appears that perhaps MLB has directed the umpires, at least in the least 10 or so years, to immediately eject any pitcher they suspect of throwing at a guy in retaliation?

Not sure but it sure seems the "our ass is in the jackpot" comment and the "you know how I feel about this" comments point to an order from on high.

FWIW Hawk and the old school guys always argued that the "players can police their own game" with these sort of "eye for an eye" beanings. I don't really believe that.

Well, it aint a-workin!
   24. Barry`s_Lazy_Boy Posted: June 16, 2018 at 02:29 PM (#5693409)
I think the ump yelling was what finally cooled things down. Collins was crazed, yelling the magic "c*** s***er", and looking for a fight to show he was "protecting his guys".

The ump gave him the yelling match he was looking for, and then it finally ended.
   25. dlf Posted: June 16, 2018 at 02:59 PM (#5693418)
The crowd mic picked up some of the confrontation in yesterday's Padres / Braves game after Joe West tossed Andy Green. I liked Green's line - roughly paraphrased - 'I'm leaving so you can blow some more calls.'

Except he already had that. The ump pulled Collins away from the other ump who Collins was yelling at.

My favorite part is Collins insisting that they get one-shot. That this is understood.

And Hallion's response: "That was it. He missed. That's all you get."

So it was Thor's fault for missing the ass-plunking.
