Deadspin/YouTube: The Art of the Japanese Bat Flip

Explains why one of the better MLB bat-flips I’ve seen came from, of all people, Dodgers LHP Hong-Chih Kuo after he took John Maine yard in 2007.

It’s interesting that this is acceptable in Japan, where scores of Western movies have taught me that they’re big on honor and subtlety. In MLB, these bat flips would be considered showing up the pitcher and would lead to brushbacks the next time up. Oh ####: Vicente Padilla just signed with a Japanese team. This could get bloody.

It's a first-class bat flip. It's at about 1:50 of this video, followed by about a minute of slow-motion replays from several angles.

The best moment in the Deadspin video is 1:21 when you get the amazing "hitter bat flip & pitcher glove slam" combo. It's like something out of a scripted movie.

I love the one where the guy releases the bat gently so it seems to float in the air for a second after he lets go.

I haven't seen the video but I am wondering if it is better than any of Jackie Robinson's bat flips (based upon what I saw in the upcoming movie?)

I love that about 60-70% of the way through the video it switches for a little bit to "funny broken/lost bats"- especially where the batter throws his bat at the pitch and hits the catcher who's leaping forward to grab the pitchout.

eta: The bat flip in #5 is pretty friggin sweet.

#3 That looks like new A's shortstop Hiro Nakajima, is that him?
