Defensive shifts and alignments a gamble Phillies willing to take — no matter the optics

“Sometimes if you’re looking at it in a small sample in a very specific time, you can go, ‘That’s not going to work, that’s not going to work, that’s not going to work,’” Kapler said after Wednesday’s game. “We have to be patient and trust that we’re trying to look at a very large sample size to evaluate if our strategies are working effectively. I can’t express enough confidence that our strategies will pay dividends, but I understand in the short term they haven’t and that can be disappointing. I get it.”

Calling for a reliever with no one warming up is the new strategy inefficiency.

It's a refinement of Tony LaRussa's tactic of calling for the wrong reliever. The game continues to evolve.

Next year, in an attempt to develop a deeper bench, Kapler will carry no relievers. It'll work but it will make his frequent calls to the bullpen awkward.

Ah yes, the proverbial zigging when everyone else is zagging.

Anyone with an Athletic subscription? Gotta say, the free stuff is getting harder and harder to digest. Especially when you got Kernan and Mushnick outside of a pay wall. I'd pay to get those two and a few others behind a pay wall so I won't have to read their stuff ever again.

Right now, Kapler is solidly in the running for the worst strategy & tactics manager I've ever seen. Phillies fans have to hope he can learn on the job and get himself up to at least "awful" by the end of the year.

Hoskins attempted to steal 3rd today with nobody out. The pitcher wasn't paying much attention to him, but noticed after he went, and threw to 3rd. It wasn't close. That may have been on Hoskins or on the coaches. Florimon was caught stealing 2nd with 1 out, but at least he's somewhat fast, and trying to reach scoring position.

If the pitcher is not in his wind up when the timer goes it is likely the runner's fault that it was botched.

I understand that, but there's really no reason to have a steal on in the first place there - with Hoskins, certainly.
