Dennis Eckersley hates when you call his hairstyle a mullet

One visit to the Skin Deep Spatique will take care of that, el pronto.

BLS: So you didn’t expect that coming into this?

Eck: (Laughs) No, I didn’t see it. But I can’t give into it and go chop my hair off because somebody doesn’t like my hair. Because I’m not doing it. It would be like cutting my ‘stache off ... I’m not doing it, you may not like it, but I gotta have it.

BLS: People have said that your hairstyle, is in fact, a mullet.

Eck: I hate that when they say mullet. That’s not good when they say mullet because that means that they don’t like my act. (Smiles)

BLS: But your hair is you.

Eck: I know, what am I supposed to do?

I'm partial to The Missourri Compromise myself. I don't think that his hair is shourt enough on the top or the sides nor long enough in back to qualify for true mullet status. Randy Johnson had a mullet; as did half of the Phillies last time they made the WS. Eck's hair is more like a guy in 1975 who wanted to let his freak flag fly; but only at half-mast.

Doesn't he need to boost up the height in the front and top to really
be a true mullet man? Maybe a bunch of Final Net will do the trick.

And will there be some point the next 30 years when the mullet will make a comeback?
The thing was fairly prevalent 15 years ago.

Goatees are gonna be the next mullet - in terms of outdated hair choice that receives ridicule - give it 3/4 years.

My only defense of my occasional sloppy goatee is sloth. It's harder to shave those parts.

There is already sort of a mini-mullet comeback in some quarters - just not the real Kentucky Waterfall/Missouri Compromise-type of the past.

Long hair on players is a bit more prevalent than it was a decade ago. I think the nadir of hair length was reached around 2001 or so. Mike Fontenot is a harbinger of the future in this regard.

When I was in Buenos Aires a couple years ago, the mullet was considered a pretty cool hairstyle. It was kind of strange, as there it's separated from its association with unsophisticated, generally white American men. There were a lot of hot girls who had it, frankly, and they looked pretty good. They could probably have pulled off any hairstyle, though.

After the first wave of the hipster ironic moustache died down, there was a brief flaring of the semi-ironic hipster mullet. If in 2003 you'd gone to a club in Berlin filled with 23-year-old Americans you'd have seen a couple dozen mini-mullets on the premises. Not Canadian hockey player caliber mulleting, more like short and severe in front and a longer block of hair in the back.

Ya know, the mullet had a brief vogue here at BTF. I've grown my hair out the past couple of years myself, but my bangs are too long and the back is too short for it to be classified a mullet.

Here in Minneapolis many of the local art-scene hipsters have grown "ironic" mullets (though they're less Missouri Compromise and more Diamond Dogs-era David Bowie). Some have even shaved lines into the sides. It looks hot on some of the chicks.

And as far as ex-ballplayer mullets are concerned, nobody beats Dan Gladden's luxurious golden pelt, which, like Eck, he still sports to this day.

I was in Italy in 2004, and the visiting Spaniards were definitely rocking the mohawk-mullet combo. The guys anyway.

What is it with relievers? Fingers, Gossage, now Eck ... all afraid to change that image.

Does Juan Marichal give the high leg kick when he's on TV? Does Fernando Valenzuela turn 180 degrees, lift his eyes to the sky, then stick out his hand when he's introduced to someone? No.

Or at least I hope not. :-)
