Denver Post: Paige: Help Woody cast his Hall votes

Paige needs help finding a 10th player for his ballot (he also needs help finding an ice pick lobotomist, but that’s another story)...here is part of Woody’s wacky selection process.

Goose Gossage…We’ve been good friends since. I would vote for him even if he wasn’t deserving…

Dale Murphy…I vote for Rockies. He was who a ballplayer should be. And he always remembers my name. I’m a sap…

Andre Dawson and Tim Raines…I’m voting for them. Both are borderline. But I was amazed by, and wrote columns about, Dawson and Raines when they played for the Denver Bears…

Don Mattingly…Another former player, now a coach, who I became friends with, so I’m prejudiced. I like voting for friends…

I met Jim Walewander once, and he seemed like a pretty cool guy (we discussed the virtues of the Dead Milkmen, among other things), so I'm voting for him. (He did smack a double in his first major league AB, against Bert Blyleven, no less.)

Seriously, is there any chance that he's reacting to the increased statistical emphasis on Hall voting by going completely away from it, writing about how subjective his vote is like Pee Wee Herman telling the other guy that he wasn't even trying to win?

His list really does seem random, but at least he's got Gossage, Raines and Blyleven on it. Those are the best three candidates on the ballot.

And then there's this, which should also give us a bit of hope:

Some messages have swayed me....I'm more impressed with Bert Blyleven after hearing from a lot of his supporters.

So he's not the worst of the voters out there by any means. His criteria are often a bit strange (friendship), but at least he doesn't have a completely closed mind.

Big deal, Blyleven isn't even in the HOF. The unbelievable (truly, as there is a large dose of "He's just poking the stats folks for fun" here) ignorance is stunning.

If he's going to add a 10th name to this list:

2. Murphy
3. Dawson
4. Raines
5. Rice
6. Mattingly
7. Blyleven
8. John
9. Concepcion

and McGwire is out because of steroids, then the obvious choice is Alan Trammell.

Voting for Mattingly because he's a friend? Not voting for McGwire because his numbers don't deserve to get in even outside steroids?

Voting for somebody undeserving... I don't really mind. If he wasn't deserving, he wouldn't get in anyway, wouldn't really matter, and you could write a weekly column about what a nice guy that player was.

Not voting for somebody deserving rangles me a lot more.

Trammell is certainly the most deserving and despite his non-rigorous (even anti-rigorous) communication style I don't really have a big problem with his choices.

After helping Woody with his HOF ballot, other things on the list to do this week:

Help Woody dress himself.

Fix Woody's plate, cut his meat, and feed him his lunch.

Lock scissor's in "safe drawer" after play time.
