Denver Post: Spilborghs Retires, Returns to Rockies as a Broadcaster.

The decision wasn’t easy for Spilborghs. He considered resuming his career with the Rockies on a minor-league contract, but he couldn’t pass up this opportunity. He played last year for Japan’s Seibu Lions, chronicling his experience for The Denver Post in a series of popular blogs.

Spilborghs, 34, has a variety of media experience, including appearing in car commercials and hosting “Spillin’ The Beans,” a comedy short for the Rockies’ website.

Spilborghs played seven seasons with the Rockies, last in 2011, hitting .272 with a .345 on-base percentage, 42 home runs and 218 RBIs.

Ryan Spilborghs was a pretty good part-timer for a while there. I had kind of forgotten.

Did anybody else read this as one heckuva single season line for 2011?

My best (only) Ryan Spilborghs memory is that I was once at a game at Coors Field when Spilborghs hit a home run that was caught on the fly by a guy wearing a $200 custom Ryan Spilborghs jersey -- probably the only one of those that was ever made.

God really is a Rockies fan.

Even if he weren't returning as a broadcaster, he'd be fondly remembered by Rockies fans for his funny, engaging personality, and for his roles on the 2007 and 2009 playoff teams. His best on-field moment, unforgettable to Rox fans, was this come-from-behind, walkoff grand slam in the 14th inning vs. the Giants in August 2009, followed by the world's fastest home run "trot";

I'd be surprised. He was about as popular as a 4th OF could be. This is a good move by Root sports, he's a popular ex-Rockie.

Yes, Spilborghs was much-beloved by the Rockies fans, and could always be counted on to do something creative with his facial hair. I wish he were replacing the terrible George Frazier in the announcer's booth.

He was in the same dorm as me at UCSB in 1998. Didn't really know him but was a cool mellow dude from what I remember. Good for him making a career out of baseball. That would be pretty fun to be in the MLB and play in Japan.

Well it was Colorado, after all!

I always liked the guy -- he could do a little of a lot of things, in my SSS viewing of him.

Spilborghs was a DMB All-Star for me. Nice 4th OF to have.

You guys had one hell of an Ultimate team back then. I remember losing 15-1 to the Tide and feeling like we accomplished something by scoring.
